DAY 24 & 25 - MAY 28,29 – JACKSON, NEW HAMPSHIRE – INN AT JACKSON
It was time to head for Jackson, New Hampshire and we took route 91 to Brattleboro, Vermont then to Keene, New Hampshire, then route 93 to Lincoln, New Hampshire through White Mountains, finally arriving in the pristine village of Jackson. We stopped in Keene and walked around downtown, it was the Monday of Memorial weekend and everything was closed. We couldn’t even find somewhere to have lunch! We continued on to Lincoln looking forward to a late lunch. There were very few cafes and we found a Mexican, we don’t like Mexican food at the best of times and the food here was just awful! I left the place without having eaten and was so disappointed. My husband had to remind me that we were driving through what was probably the most scenic part of our entire trip. The sun was out and we were in the mountains! And to our amazement a black bear ran across the road right in front of us!
We arrived at the Inn at Jackson and when I got out of the car I was enveloped by a swarm of small black insects. I wish we had been prepared with insect repellent, our innkeeper was disinterested that I react violently to insect bites. When a guesthouse is aware that biting insects may cause a problem to their guests I would expect they would have a supply of repellent. After all many provide complimentary shampoo and body lotion which I never use. The inn is really a beautiful mountain retreat - you can read my review on tripadvisor. That night we dined at Christmas Farm Inn. Monday is “buy one entrée get one free” so our meal was extremely good value.
We woke to a wet day so our mountain sightseeing was once again in rain. The mountains are beautiful any time but the weather hampered our desire to walk in the forest. We had delicious sandwiches and fresh juice for lunch at Peach’s, North Conway and reminisced as to whether this was the same café where we had breakfast during our last visit 14 years ago. Rain once again provided an excuse to visit a factory outlet and New Hampshire is tax free!
That night there was a spectacular thunderstorm, knocking out the power in North Conway. We were fortunate that Jackson still had power and we were able to have dinner at The Wentworth, an elegant inn just a few minutes drive down the road. It was a wild night and the restaurant was almost empty but we enjoyed the music, the meal and the service.
NEXT STOP MAINE!
