What to expect for crowds on Memorial Day Weekend in Montauk

We're thinking of driving out to Montauk from Bayonne, NJ on Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, just for the day. What can we expect for crowds? What places/things to do should we be sure to see/do? Are there parking lots where we can leave the car for the day while in town? Where's the best place for seafood that won't break the bank and is casual enough for day travelers?

You can expect mases of traffic on the ay there - since there will be a gazillion local going to the beaches on Long Island for the day - so expect at least an extra hour in traffic in each direction.

At Montauk you can see the town, tiny, the lighthouse (in a park about 10 miles away) and the dock/fishing boats, another mile or two away from the town.

Not sure what you are going for - but this is much more middle class than the Hamptons and you won't see huge mansions, upscale shopping and uber trendy shops and restaurants - as you will in east hampton southamptpn or even Sag Harbor.

Leave early, like 7-8am.

Will take about 3-3.5 hours.

Plenty to do. There is parking in various areas. Nice way to spend the day. Definitely visit the lighthouse. They charge just to bring your car into the park, but worth it none the less.

I thnk a daytrip drive on a holiday weekend is crazy but that's your decision. You will hit massive beach traffic to the western LI beaches unless you leave really early. I'd say 6 am departure is better. Most village parking is limited to 2 or 3 hrs. So while you can park, you can't stay in the same place all day. If you've never been to the Hamptons, you might want to stop in 1 or more of those villages along the way. I like Inlet Seafood which is less well known, out of the mainstream and a bit of a drive. The views are lovely. Navy Beach is a beautiful spot but a bit of a scene.
