Marist Graduation

We are arriving early on a Thursday into LaGuardia then going to Grand Central Station where we will take the train to Poughkeepsie for a graduation on Friday. On Friday evening we will do the reverse but going from Grand Central to a hotel in Manhattan. Would anyone have knowledge if this makes sense and or a simpler way to do it? Thank you and I appreciate any ideas on how to best do this .

Yes, the Metro North commuter train is the way to go to Poughkeepsie. (Cheaper than Amtrak from Penn Station which requires reservations.)

If you are heading directly to Poughkeepsie from LGA, you also have the option of taking the M60 bus (or a cab) to the 125th Street Metro North Station (@ 125th and Park Ave): …mta.info/nyct/…index.html

You don't need reservations for the commuter trains, but buy your tickets before boarding to avoid an on-board surcharge. Both GCT and 125th street have attended ticket booths and easy to use ticket vending machines.

Sit on the left hand side of the northbound train for a better view - some of the ride is scenic.

There are a few Amtrak trains between Penn Station and Poughkeepsie, but not very many. They also require advance reservations, are more expensive, and more subject to delay, especially for the return to New York. So Metro North to Grand Central is the better choice.
