Family holiday October 2017

Hi,

We are visiting Sag Harbor from Ireland for 10 nights at the end of October and are looking for some general recommendations for things to do and places to eat etc. We are a family with 3 babies. We will have a car so are planning on a visit to Montauk and an Outlet mall but other than that we have nothing planned. We'd like to get an authentic American holiday experience and also a good local trip around Sag Harbor and The Hamptons. Some specific things I'd like to find:

-A good traditional American breakfast dinner (with an all you can eat buffet for example) that won't mind 3 baby chairs

-A good supermarket for supplies

-A good restaurant for local fare

-A good bar for drinks (we will have a babysitter for one night or two perhaps !)

Any suggestions appreciated! Thanks!

You do realize that October is off season in Sag Harbor. Much too cold for the water and will even be chilly on the beach in warm clothing. And some places will be closed for the season - restaurants shops, museums, activities, etc. Tendays seems an awful lot of time there off season. (My parents used to take us there for 2 weeks every summer - but there is tons more to do hen and we were older kids with bikes to get around.)

If you go to the North Fork you can visit wineries and they may have pumpkin picking. Check google for a petting zoo for the kids and there is a small aquarium in Riverhead.

Generally anyplace with an all you can eat buffet has poor food since it's been sitting on a steam table forever.

Where are you landing and renting your car?

Hi, thanks for the reply. Our timing is a little out of our control so we are going to have to make the best of it. We will be landing in NYC and renting the car there. We are hoping to explore long island. The all you can eat reference was just an idea but really I'm just looking for a relaxed, authentic breakfast option

Are you landing at JFK? That wouldn't be bad - reasonably convenient and tons of car rental agencies. But landing at EWR would be a major PIA since you would have to make your way entirely thought NJ and across the city.

My family lives in Sag Harbor and October is BEAUTIFUL to visit. Still so much to do and you can enjoy all the harvest time farm stand activates including pumpkin picking and the Maze Mazes (giant mazes built with corn stalks). I am assuming you will have a car, if not get one. There’s a children’s museum in Sag Harbor/ Bridgehampton https://www.cmee.org/ and sometimes Bay Street Theater has weekend kids events http://www.baystreet.org/. Walking along the ocean at Sag Main Beach is great in October as is a walk along the bay along Long Beach, best is it’s out of season so you don’t need parking passes. Take the south ferry across to Shelter Island then the north ferry to Greenport and ride carousel. Drive out to Montauk and climb the light house.

For food all the restaurants out of season are very kid friendly however we do not have big buffet meals, this is small quaint village not a sprawling suburb. There are diners in Southampton and East Hampton but I wouldn’t drive all the way there just to have breakfast. The BEST local breakfast is at the Poxabogue golf course, no really it is. It’s called Fairway (but everyone just calls it Poxabogue) 3556 Montauk Hwy, Bridgehampton, NY 11932. Across the street from them is a good BBQ place, Townline BBQ. Another local Sag favorite breakfast is Estia's Little Kitchen http://estias.com/sagharbor/. Also in Brodgehampton a great breakfast is at Pierre's and for pizza World Pie. In Sag for casual dining there is LT Burger, Bay Burger, The Corner, Il Capuccino, Dockside, and Conca D'Oro and my favorite sandwich place is Espresso. You can also get breakfast take out at the Golden Pear or Bagel Buoy. For groceries just go to the IGA on main street, they also have great hot dishes to go. Bars go to The Corner, Muse In the Harbor, Baron's Cove, Page, Wolffer Kitchen, and Dockside. You can't go wrong with any of the restaurants in Sag after the season, it's the best (only) time to get a good table.

In addition to Gail's recos

-A good traditional American breakfast dinner that won't mind 3 baby chairs

The Candy Kitchen in Bridgehampton

-A good supermarket for supplies

King Kullen in Bridgehampton is much bigger and better for stocking basics. There's also a Kmart in the same mall. The market in Sag Harbor is pricey but has good meat. Also, when you go to the outlet mall in Riverhead, there are loads of big stores like Walmart and Target that also carry some foods.

-A good restaurant for local fare

LT Burger is most kid friendly and the owner just took over the pizza place across the street, Conca D,Oro.

Lulu,s Kitchen is new this year and good for both drinks and food.

World Pie in Bridgehampton is also pretty kid friendly with pizza and other things.

-A good bar for drinks (we will have a babysitter for one night or two perhaps !)

Baron's Cove across from the water is popular for happy hour. The Corner Bar is very local and casual. The bar at the American hotel is cosy on a cool night.

Hi. Good to hear about your travels. We did 10 days in Ireland last summer and loved it.

The easiest answer is groceries. King Kullen shopping area is a great place. This is a huge supermarket in the area. Get your main supplies there. There is also a KMart next door if you need basics or travel stuff. The area has many great restaurants. There's no easy answer for you there. Once you get into town you can walk the whole area in 20 mins and survey the choices. Lulu. Muse. Wolffer Kitchen. Dopio. Dockside and several others offer great food and ambiance. Explore the bay beaches and ocean beaches. Especially the bay at sunset. There are nature preserves and lots to explore. There are hundreds of farms and you can do a corn maze or pumpkin picking and enjoy fresh foods. That's a good start! Brandon
