things to do with the kids

Spending four days in Sag Harbor with our kids (8,6,1) next week (end of March to first week for April. Looking for any fun things to do with them. Also, would love some restaurant recommendations, ice cream shops, bakery/café, and places that deliver.

Danspapers.com

Is a local weekly free paper that usually lists kid friendly events. The Children's Museum in Bridgehampton is one idea. Taking a drive out to Monatuk to see the lighthouse is another, but doublecheck that it's open at this time of year. The Bridgehampton Library may have a childrens reading hour on the weekend.

In the other direction, if you,re interested in doing any outlet shopping in Riverhead, there's an Aquarium in Riverhead for the kids.

Restaurants in Sag Harbor

-LT Burger in Sag Harbor village is popular with families

-Budda Berry also in Sag Harbor Village is a self serve yogurt place that also has crepes, smoothies, soup, chili etc. great for kids. They also make good coffee

-Conca D'Oro is the pizza place in the village that serves both slices and whole pies.

-Sagtown Coffee up a flight of stairs in a courtyard off Main st. Is my go to coffee place and they have delicious pastry, cakes, cookies and also sell sandwiches and other drinks.

Along Bay St. In Sag Harbor across from the water is

-Bagel Buoy and there's a small market called

-Provisions with healthy food and prepared things

I'm told

-Harbor Market & Kitchen makes excellent sandwiches. I've tasted some of their pastries sold at Sagtown coffee and they're excellent.

Speaking of pastries, dont miss Tate's Cookies. Their original bakery is in Southampton but the cookies are sold in all the local stores and are really excellent. They're known for chocolate chip but I love the double chocolate and also the ginger.

-Schiavoni's market on Main st. is a good small market that also sells sandwiches and other prepared things.

-Cromers Market on Noyack Rd. is known for their meats and stocks a lot of English and Irish items. For big supermarket shops, most use

-King Kullen in the shopping center in Bridgehampton. I believe they also take orders by phone or internet and deliver.

-Bay Burger is a local fast food shop on the Sag Habor Turnpike ( on the way to the Children's museum) with good food and ice cream.

In Brideghampton,

-the Candy Kitchen is an old fashioned coffee shop with tasty food, very kid friendly and delicious homemade ice cream.

Also in Bridgehampton,

-World Pie is popular for thin crust pizza and basic American food.

The Poxabogue Golf Course (9 hole course) should be open and mayhave some kids lessons. They have a diner type cafe that is popular for all day breakfast as well as excellent burgers and sandwiches.

Breadzilla down the road from it in Wainscott (between Bridgehampton and East Hampton) is a somewhat hidden spot with good home baked muffins, pastries, breads etc. and also sells sandwiches.

Thanks for the suggestions! We'll definitely drive to see the lighthouse and the aquarium. Can't wait to try the food. I'm assuming the restaurants would be open, right?

The lighthouse is currently only open on weekends.

The restaurants I listed are all open but may have one day a week when they're closed. LT Burger is usually closed on Tuesdays. I think Conca D'Oro may be the same.

These things may be open, given them a call if you are interested:

Bay Street Theater http://www.baystreet.org/

Goat on a Boat http://www.goatonaboat.org/

The Long House - it's an amazing outdoor sculpture garden but kid friendly http://www.longhouse.org/

Morton Wildlife Refuge - great for trail walking and bring bird seeds. Since all the kids feed the chickadees them from their tiny hands the birds will fly right down land on their fingers (just tell them to stay very still and quiet). http://www.fws.gov/refuge/elizabeth_a_morton/

Also just walking along the bay at Long Beach (along Noyac Road) is lots of fun to collect rocks then go to the Five and Dime on Main Street pick up stickers and or paint/ markers and make souvenirs.

Take the south ferry to Shelter Island, drive across and then take the north ferry to Greenport for the carousel! The ferry rides are super fast but so much fun for kids (and adults) and to save $$$ you can park your car at the North Ferry dock on Shelter Island and just ride the North Ferry as passengers to Greenport. Greenport is small and is covered best by foot, no need to pay to bring the car on the ferry.

BTW - The best burger in Sag is Bay Burger, plus they have a kids area and amazing handmade ice cream.
