Miscellaneous First Timer Questions

After years in Duck or Carolla, we are staying in Salvo in a few weeks. Its' not the easiest to find detailed info on Hatteras Island, so I'm hoping you can help: Best restaurant for steamed crabs? Best restaurant for a foodie (we have a special occasion and would like to have one nice dinner out if that's possible)? Best town to rent a sailboat? To charter a fishing captain? Where to put in on sound side for stand up paddle boarding (we are getting beach gear with out house and think we'll go with the SUPs)?

Thank you!

I am not sure there are sailboat rentals anywhere around here.

Best steamed crabs - it's crabs in steam so how could there be much difference? Anyplace that offers them should be fine. Not many restaurants offer them because the turn over is so slow -- if you are talking about the blue crabs that are local here. Check out this yelp page:

You might be able to rent a Hobie at the Salvo watersports, but that is pretty small boat. Restaurant for a foodie? Keep in mind this is a tourist destination, not a major metro, so high end is going to be limited. If you happen to go to Ocracoke, Dajio is close. For charters, Teach's Lair, they have everything on the spectrum. IMO, blue crabs are way too much hassle for what you get,, unless the beer is flowing rapidly.

Foodie way to eat Blue Crabs is when they are molting to get them when they're at the softshell stage and deep fry them whole. There are only certain times of year that that happens. https:/…

Good Winds has good food and live music (a good singer w/ acoustic guitar when we were there),

as well as the best sunset view of the sound (and people sailboarding).

Open for lunch and dinner.

It's a casual place, not your dress up Sunday best kind of place.

But you're at the beach on vacation, so casual is a good fit for most folks.

Enjoy!

PS- you know that Salvo is not really close to Frisco, right?

Tri-Villages: Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, can only tell where one ends & another begins by the signs, lol

You left behind the foodie places in Duck and Corolla.

The salvo day use area just south of the tri village is a good place to put in a paddle board
