The Hoste , very worried about our impending stay

We should be happy and excited and looking forward to our short break but the more reviews I read the more a sense of impending doom takes over!. When we booked this 12 months ago all was good, based on this years reviews I would have run a mile and not booked but after paying a massive none returnable deposit we face the difficult decision of cutting our losses or grinning and baring it, if we decide to go on 10 September I will let you know how we get on. The dangers of booking too well ahead I suppose, much can change!

Well I would go anyway. The Hoste seems very variable and to have a high turnover of staff. You might catch them on one of their better times. I don't frequent the place myself as they seem to discourage locals. But aside from the Hoste, Burnham Market changes little and there's lots to see and do, even if you restrict yourselves to the area between Hunstanton and Wells. Make use of the Coasthopper bus and enjoy the Norfolk Coast Path.

Thanks for your prompt reply, really appreciated. Still undecided, maybe find somewhere else but with 2 large dogs in tow our options are always limited, hence the booking ahead.. If we go I will tell it like it is from my own experience .

Go with an open mind, keep your expectations realistic and see what happens .I would always grin and bear it over cutting my losses. It's nice to be away even if things could be better.

Well we arrived last night at The Hoste. Room is very nice, clean and spacious and house keeping is good. Front desk / reception staff have been wonderful, nothing is too much trouble. Food classed as fine dining I would describe as ok, had much better but had much worse, it meets the "criteria". Only big problem here is the service in the dining room, it is incredibly, painfully slow, about an hours wait between courses last night, infact there seemed to be very long periods where no food appeared at all at any of the tables near us. Usually a bottle of wine lasts us the meal but we had almost run out before the main arrived. Sunday lunch today, we actually walked out in the end. Maybe dine somewhere else tomorrow. First impressions long and short, good hotel but restaurant is hopeless.

Thanks for this Chrissy. Hope you're enjoying North Norfolk anyway. I hope you have, or will, let the hotel know of your experience, and I would certainly write a review for Trip Advisor, which I know the manager of the Hoste reads. I think it's quite unforgivable what has happened to the Hoste, but it still seems to be attracting customers.

Luckily you have lots of alternative places to eat out if you don't mind a short drive - perhaps not if you like to share a bottle of wine equally ;)

Thanks for your replies. I do like my wine so we stuck with The Hoste. Service in the restaurant continued to be hit and miss (mainly miss!) but the food was ok. Before arriving at The Hoste we stayed in Wells for a few days and found The Crown Hotel there had great food, far superior to The Hoste and we enjoyed 3 meals there with great service. You can't have everything and whilst the food was better at The Crown we preferred the actual location of The Hoste ie I really liked Burnham Market and its shops and friendly feel..

We also loved The Holkham estate, both beach side and estate side, because it seemed quieter than Wells.Had the restaurant service not been so bad I would go back to Burnham Market, such a pity I can't just put the Crown there instead then all would be perfect for me at least!

Interesting.

I haven't been to the Hoste for years.

Glad you had a good visit over all.

We were in Burnham Market in March, visited the new restaurant on North Street which was very nice. Didn't eat at The Hoste as we had a bad experience and don't think we'll give it another go. Whilst we were there they seemed to be renovating a property on the high street to open as a restaurant. Does anyone know whether it has opened yet?

Locals stay away from the Hoste Arms frankly because its so awful....see endless poor reviews.

No 29 in the village may open in a couple of months and hopefully it will replace Paul Whittome's great but ruined lovely pub, as the place to eat out in Burnham Market
