Help with Meghalaya plan

Hi, I am visiting Meghalaya in Nov. I reach Guwhati on Friday and leave on the next Saturday. So total of 8 days I have.

My plan is:

Fri Guwhati 9am to Tura

Sat Tura

Sun Tura to Nongairat via Cherapunji

Mon Nongairat - Start the trek

Tue Nongairat - trek to Rainbow waterfall and return to Double decker brigde same day

Wed Nongairat to Shillong

Thu Shillong - Mawlynnong and Dawki

Fri Shillong Nohkalikai waterfalls and Mawsmai caves

Sat Shillong to Calcutta at 2pm - What can be done early morning?

I want to see the Nartiang village as well. Should I drop Tura? Is it too ambitious?

What is Umed? If you want relaxation then it's Mawphanlur. If you want relaxation with some activities, its Mawlyngbna.

Umden. Understand spell error. I plan to go in 1st week of Nov.

Tell me will I get a decent place to stay at the planned places with basic needs like clean bed and a toilet?

I maybe solo or with 1 person. So can I get a public transport to these places and not rent a car?

Yes I do drive a non-gear 2 wheeler and also a 4 wheeler :) What is NH7? Can I get a public transport. I get to meet the people on such journeys so that is also my intentions to take the bus.

Fri: Shillong Nohkalikai waterfalls and Mawsmai caves. These are in Cherrapunjee, not in Shillong.

NH7 is weekender music concert, very popular event. Book accommodation in advance.

If you are planing to visit offbeat destinations, then it would be advisable to have your own vehicle than rely on public transport

It is good to meet people. But you will meet them when you reach each place, not just on public transportation. Reason I am saying this is public transport network is not very robust in the off beat places, so your entire plans will be dependent on the last bus/shared cab that leaves these offbeat places, which generally is just after lunch, resulting to 3-4 valuable sunshine hours lost inside a vehicle.

If you have your own set of wheels, then that issue can be avoided.

We went on a 9D/ 8N package; from Guwahati to Shillong, Sight seeing in Shillong for 2 days (Cherrapunje and Mawlyngong fully) and back to Guwahati. Then we started to Tawang en route halts at Tezpur, Dirang and Bomdilla. We were a group of 4 ladies and overall we had an amazing and completely safe experience. We were initially a little edgy about our safety. But the driver (Mr. Sanjay Singh - 9402557527) was the best we could ever ask for !! He knew the place very well and took immense care of our safety and gave the best options for visit. In my travel experience so far I have not seen a driver with so much dedication and perfection in his driving. He did not have any bad habits like smoking or drinking while driving. Kudos to him :) Never once did we feel our safety was compromised since we were surrounded by the best warm hearted people and the best driver we could wish for.

We went through a travel agency, but our driver is starting up his own agency and I would recommend to reach out to him for travel and accommodation. You can call the number provided in this write up. The agency did arrange the tour very well but it was a bit costly. There was a lot of customization for our needs and good suggestions by our driver. The hotels booked were good except at Tezpur. It was two horrible rooms on top of a wine shop. Never even think about staying at hotel Grand Palace, Tezpur. The photos on the site and actual rooms available are deceptive for this particular place. It was the only low point of our otherwise wonderful trip.

We visited Shillong, Cherapunjee and Mawlyngong in Meghalaya and Tawang in Assam. Meghalaya has good roads and so covering it was easy. Since Arunachal has only rudimentary road connectivity be a little patient as even 15kms might take an hour to cover due to landslides or snowy conditions. Better discuss with the tour operator and driver to know the time it would usually take to scale to the top during that season. ILP is required to get into Arunachal which will be arranged by the tour operator. Also to get to the BUM LA pass further permits are needed which will take a day to process. Be specific to the tour operator to arrange it as we missed this and so had to turn back without seeing the Indo-China border.

Overall just the sheer beauty of the landscape, the hospitality of the people and adventure of facing the raw power of mother nature will be an experience of a lifetime!! Highly recommended. More recommend to hire Sanjay Singh as your driver for guranteed safe trip !!

Our duration of the trip was from 02/Sep/2017 to 11/Sep/2017

About our driver, Mr. Sanjay Singh:

He knew the place very well and took immense care of our safety and gave the best options for visit. In my travel experience so far I have not seen a driver with so much dedication and perfection in his driving. He did not have any bad habits like smoking or drinking or using phone while driving. He is so much used to the roads there that he knows the best way to drive through mashy roads. Also on our way back to Guwahati we were held up on the road due to floods. He did not get tensed and instead kept enquiring people for alternate routes and finally managed to get another quick route. He is planning to start up his own agency by this month end and told us that he can do it at a way more cheaper price. Kudos to him :)
