I used to live there many years ago. It is a little town with not a lot going on. There are shops & a few pubs, but not exactly 24/7. Not much to stay in the town for, but ok as base for exploring.

The only problem may be dogs as restriced access to some locations / beaches during summer.

There is train station linking main line between Plymouth & Penzance so you can access many areas easily. Beaches of south west Cornwall such as Falmouth, St Ives etc can be reached by train (with 1 change). Most dogs are permitted on train free of charge Eden Project can be reached by buses from St Austell rail station, but may have to make alternative arrangements for dogs as am sure not permitted.

The nearest town of major size would be St Austell - 15 mins or so drive. I think there are buses between the 2 towns but unsure how often. Trains go between the 2.

I don't know what you interests are etc, but if you have a car would suggest driving to Bodmin / Wadebridge area one day (30 mins . . . ish) & hiring bikes on the Camel Trail Cycle Path. This would be good for dogs & you can go as far as Padstow.... beautiful. Quite a long way, but fairly flat & safe for dogs & kids.

Llanhydrock House is close to Bodmin, but not sure if dogs allowed. Check National Trust website for this & other places.

If you tarvel by train ask for group discount as 3 or more qualify.

Will try to find out more for you if you reply with your more info.

Lostwithiel is a small town which many visitors simply pass through on their way west. Sitting on the River Fowey it has simple charms that are the mark of Cornwall. You can feed there, pick up any provisions you need, and there are a number of reasonable pubs which you can find off the main road. It is surrounded by superb countryside that is not to be missed. To the east side of the Fowey you can travel down to Lerryn, St Winnow (fantastic old church), St Veep (fantastic old Church), and on to Polruan, opposite Fowey town. You have Restormel castle just up the valley (English Heritage) and a host of woodland for kids to run with dogs. Lanhydrock House (National Trust) is close by and is one of the best houses to visit in Cornwall though can be busy. In such a location you are within striking distance of just about anywhere. The beaches on the North Coast at Crantock, Perranporth and Fistral etc are all accessible. The sandy beaches in the local area are a bit commercialised (Carlyon Bay). St Austell has not got much to offer but you have the Eden Project in the hills behind it (though I’ve never been I understand it is well worth a visit). If you’re a foot slogging group not afraid of some hard work, get your hands on a 1:50000 map of the area and strike out. The further from the road the less holidaymakers and the more pleasure. Leave Lostwithiel on the A38 at the bottom of the hill the road bears right. Take the junction on the left which will you straight on a hill. Follow this road, always keeping left, and eventually you’ll pop out near Golant on the way to Fowey. It’s a pleasant little detour. Have a good time!

Gosh Janner and Boybear, thank you ever so much for all that info!!!

It sounds great! I never thought about access being restricted to beaches for the dogs so I got on to the tourist board and theyre sending out some stuff for me.............and also some places to take bored children when its raining!!

Lostwithiel itself sounds fine, I know it may be quiet but as long as theres a couple of pubs and places to eat we'll be fine!

As for the walking, great idea as we all love hiking, and thta suggested route sounds lovely!!

Ill let you know how we got on on our return

thanks again!!
