White Haven and the Poconos! Have I made a big mistake??

We've booked a week in Mount Laurel Resort in the Poconos first week of May. From all that I've read here, I am terrified of what we will find. It's too late to cancel.

Is there ANYTHING good about White Haven, Mount Laurel and the Poconos?? One National Park is what TripAdvisor gives me for things to do.

Is there gambling anywhere nearby? How long a drive, realistically, from Philly?

Thanks in advance.

You'll be 14 miles from Mohegan Sun Racino in Wilkes-Barre, and about 30 miles from Mount Airy Casino Resort in Mt Pocono. Both are slots only. Mohegan Sun is in a temporary (and very smoky) facility. The racing season has started so you could also watch harness races there. Mount Airy is in a very nice building that also houses a hotel. It's in a much prettier setting.

You could take day trips to the Allentown/Bethlehem/Easton area. There are some nice small museums, shops, and restaurants. In Easton, you can take a tour of the Crayola factory.

Small cities & towns are not TripAdvisor's strong suit. So Google the small towns and Pocono Mountains and you'll find more to do.

You'll be about 30-45 minutes from the towns of Jim Thorpe and Delaware Water Gap, and both are worth a visit if time allows.

Jim Thorpe is known as "Little Switzerland" because of its unique geography - literally a small town carved into a mountainside, with winding roads lined with shops, restaurants & museums. You can tour the Harry Packer Mansion, the old jail (famous for the holding and hangings of the "Molly Maguires" and it's supposed ghosts), take ghost walks in the evening, enjoy a scenic train ride,... It's a great little town in which to spend a day.

Delaware Water Gap sits along the Delaware River and has both a PA & NJ side. Lots of recreation (hiking, boating, fishing, etc.) and cool little country shops & restaurants. There's a scenic trolly ride you can take of the area, and just beyond the NJ side is the Lakota Wolf Preserve, where you can view wolf packs in their natural environment.

From White Haven, it's about 90 minutes down the PA Turnpike to Philly.

I dont know anything about the mt laurel resort but if the reviews on here are bad, i would go with what they are saying. I have looked at just a few of the comments. It also got a rating of 2. I usually dont stay anywhere with a rating below 3 1/2 - 4. Go through every review on there to see where the problem lyes. Also I would think since you arent going until May that you can most definitely cancel your reservation.

we are owners at this property and i think thast a week is too long to be there we only use it for long weekends and that is just about enough for us but because you are not from the area you may find other things that we are not interested in exciting. the new indoor water park is getting good reviews so that is good for a day it's over at split rock

Nearby Lehigh Gorge and Hickory Run State Parks are worthwhile if you are into nature.

There is an amazing boulder field at Hickory Run (nothing else like it in the eastern US) that is definitely worth checking out assuming the road back to it is open/navigable (which I think it should be by May).
