Things to do near White Haven for a weekend (incl Jim Thorpe

As you can see by my screen name we live in Philly. I have a free night to use at a hotel chain and thought we'd try to see some colors. I've always heard interesting things about Jim Thorpe and it's been on my "bucket list" The closes location the free night can be used to JT is White Haven and WH is about 35 minutes north of JT. The hotel has an indoor pool so that's an advantage. And my thought was to hit JT on way up on a Saturday and then on To WH for the night. We are not into Casinos and I see there are a few State Parks near WH or even Hazelton (which is nearby, right?) If the weather is good, we might enjoy those. We are walkers but not hikers.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Steve

The two most interesting state parks within driving distance of White Haven are Hickory Run and Ricketts Glen

Hickory Run has the boulder field which is what it sounds like, a huge area of boulders with no vegetation. The field is quite close to the road. You can venture as far into it as you like.

Rickets Glen is noted for its waterfalls. There are over 20 waterfalls in a hike of a little over 3 miles- some over 50 feet in heighth. As you might expect the dirt trail is steep, and, in places wet, from spray from the falls. I would not rate it particularly difficult, but you should wear shoes with a good tread.

A second vote for Hickory Run and the boulder filed. It's a cool site but you do need some balance if you are going to walk across it. There are also other lighter hikes in the park.

If you have the time, Get off the Turnpike in Allentown and take 22 East to Rt 145. This will take you over the mountain and past Blue Mt. Ski area instead of going through the Lehigh Tunnel. Best to do if you have a GPS so you can follow the back roads to JT. (keep going over the mountain instead of back tracking.)

There are some great views and scenery by going this way. Also the Appaliachian Trail is on top of the mountain. There are also several small boulder fileds like the much much larger one at HR.

22E to 145 to 248 to 249 I think is the way to get to JT when exiting at Allentown.

There is a cool Country Junction in Lehighton as well (Part of the "World's Largest General Store" chain.)

Thanks folks. The waterfalls sound great but my wife is not one for "hiking" on uneven roads. How much time should I allow for JT.

And Dmoz, I could use a bit more of a "plan" to see what you mentioned - scenery-. We can leave Philly early Saturday and would stay in White Haven Saturday night. So what route would you take to go to both JT and the other areas? Didn't I see a few state parks near by? I sure appreciate the help.

Jim Thorpe has a fall foliage train that would be interesting if the weather is good.

Jim Thorpe itself is probably no more than a hour to walk around, not including eating .

If you don't hike your question about the state parks is pretty much irrelevant(except for theBoulder Field at Hickory Run). The whole area is wooded, so driving through the state parks will not add much to your experience.

Depending on where you leave from in Philly...

Taking the TP to JT as is will be about 1h 30m.

To go back roading....

Start off Turnpike North to Allentown exit.

Take PA-22 to PA-145. This will take you to Blue Mt. Ski area. About 1h 30m. Stop and check out the scenery on your way.

From Blue Mt to JT it would be best to mapquest or google map it in advance if you don't have a GPS. It will take you 30 - 40 min to get from BM area to JT without stops. I would suggest going over the mountain instead of doubling back south towards Allentown.

Spend a few hours walking around JT. See the prison, the Packard Mansion, shop, eat, relax....

JT to White Haven is about 40 minutes.

White Haven to Hickory Run is about 30 minutes (10 miles of back roads so slow travel). Do either that day or wait until Sunday morning.

Thanks for your he;lp Dmoz and Brooks quarry. Werll, I booked my hotel in White Haven for next Friday and hope there is still some color. My wife can't come with me so I'll be on my own and - though not a hiker - am a bit more adve turous in walking. I printed out the route you suggested that fining maps in this digital age is harder. Could I possibly ask either - or both of you - to help me plan a route using addresses or points of interest that I can plug into my GPS? I'll be leaving downtown Philly by 9:30 (avoiding (I hope) expressway traffic to the NE Extension. I'm coming back on late Saturday afternoon. Also, I didn't ask before but if you have suggestions for lunch stop in Jm Thorpe and on the other day. and especially dinner in White Haven I'd appreciate it. Good reasonable local food where a single person can dine. Again thanks for your help! Ever need help in Philly, just ask. I'm an "expert" here!

Because of the hot weather, the leaves are changing more slowly than normal this year. There should be plenty of colour.

Can't help with GPS references- I don't use it myself.

The best restaurant in white haven in my opinion, is the Powerhouse (although Charley Weavers is also good) If you want diner food the Family diner is reliably good.

Hi all! Thanks for the great advice. I got MOST things done. It POURED on Friday untill I passed Allentown so did not get off and take alternate road. I did take 309 home from Lansford to Allentown and picked up I-476. Only thing I planned that I didn't get to was the Rockport waterfalls (due to lack of time). I ate at Bear Appetite in Jim Thorpe for Lunch. HUGE portions and great sandwiches and fries at reasonable price - and at Murphy's Loft in Blakeslee for dinner.andwich menu wide and decent price. Dinners were in high teens and low $20s. It was okay but can't rave about it.

Anyway, rather than posting a report I thought I'd share the 6 minute Video i made which will show pretty much what I did in 2 days! here is link http://youtu.be/EfWnl6BU4xc
