Girls trip

My best friend and I are visiting Charleston at the end of March. We are in our mid 20s and are looking for any advice on things to do during the day and at night. Are there any tours you would recommend? Also any good bars/nightlife/live music spots you would suggest? Thanks!

If you want to be able to walk to restaurant, bars, historic sites, museums, shopping, etc you will need to stay in the historic district. When looking for hotels ~ "historic district" and "downtown" are NOT the same thing. Downtown is not walkable to anything. If you stay in the historic district you will not need a car, except to visit outlying plantations and/or beaches. If you wish to do that, you can rent a car for the day, Enterprise will deliver one to your hotel. If you have not already done so, please look to the right side of this page for Top Questions about Charleston (on a computer, won't show up on a phone). This will give you lots of suggestions and ideas on what is available to see and do in the area. Some posts are older, but info on historic sites does not change from year to year.

Also, read thru some of the other Charleston Forum posts ~ you will find loads of info on restaurants, places to visit, etc. Once you have some ideas on what might interest you, you can ask additional questions and we can help you plan.

Yep, you need to do some reading and let us know what interests you.

Depending upon how long you are going to be here, the Heritage Pass may be a good deal for you.

For tours, look at Historic Charleston's festival of houses and gardens.

Thanks for your responses! We do actually already have where we are staying. We booked an air bnb just over the Ashley River. We don't mind taking Ubers places. The Historic tours look great! Is there any specific places you would recommend going at night or even during the day for food or night life? In terms of type of food we are pretty open but my other friend is not like seafood. Any breweries or wineries you would recommend?

Food, tell us your budget, that will help. Most all of the better restaurants will have choices that will appeal to everyone, seafood or not. A few suggestions are Macintosh, Magnolias, FIG, those will get you started.

For lunches, you might try SNOB or one of the BBQ places (Rodney Scott or Lewis).

There are all sorts of breweries in the Charleston area, several on the Peninsula.

The only winery is out on Wadmalaw Island, would be pretty expensive to Uber there. It's very sweet, muscadine wine, not something that appeals to many. On the other hand, it is also the home to Firefly Distillery, which is lots of fun, but again, an expensive Uber ride. There is an organized tour through Tipsy Tours that can take you there.

West Ashley, where I presume you are staying over the Ashley River, has Charlestowne Fermentory- a brewery with rotating chefs in their communal kitchen, a place called Cannon Distillery next door as well as other pubs, restaurants and cafes all in walking distance of each other in Avondale. Just about every place has happy hours starting around 4 or 5 pm. In another area of West Ashley is the Frothy Beard Brewery, a very popular place that also serves pizza. The Tin Roof has various bands playing nightly, and there are bars with weekend live music .

You can find night life in pretty much any area of Charleston. The historic sites and typical things that many people hope to see while in Charleston will be primarily in the historic district. You may want to plan to spend your days in the historic district visiting museums, historic home tours, seeing the Battery, the Market, etc and your evenings checking out night life closer to your lodging.
