Are there any bars in downtown Charleston or nearby that play country music, or have live country music bands?
It's funny but you never really think of "what's missing" until someone asks the question. I truly enjoy the country bars I've been to in Texas and Arizona and never thought of researching the local Charleston scene until I read your question. We absolutely have limited venues for true country music and dancing here in Charleston. I did find the two somewhat local establishments below but can't comment as I've never been to either. There are tons of places in Charleston, the Historic District and further that have live music that will always feature a little bit of everything but not truly dedicated to Country Music. Here in Mt. Pleasant "The Southern" often has dedicated evenings of country music but figuring out which night that is, involves knowing what some of the local bands are known for. Which as a visitor, you wouldn't know. As a local, neither do I. I'm a fan of the Windjammer out on the Isle of Palms and they often have more live country nights than many of the other places I've been to and when it comes to a view - nothing beats the Atlantic Ocean right from their deck. http://www.the-windjammer.com/wp/

Sorry for the repeated post but the last link I attached was for Big Jim's in the Radisson in North Charleston which no longer exists. Please ignore that one. The other two links are good.
