I'd say that it depends on the time you have available (if you're retired and travelling for a month that's very different to if you only have a weekend) and whether gaining 2 extra days in the Black Hills is worth $275 to you ???
Also, if there's 2 or 3+ travelling in your party the drive would be a completely different experience to driving alone.
is a five hour or so drive...We stopped first at Hot Springs to see the Mammoth Museum and then drove through Wind Caves National Park to Custer State Park.....
If budget is most important drive
If getting there and saving 10 hours drive time (to/from) is more important, pay the delta in price.
The city airport (we've been inside to pick up a friend) is small. Its easy to get your luggage and pick up your rental car, so its easier but more costly to fly into Rapid City.

There is no Amtrak service in South Dakota.
There is no Amtrak service in Wyoming either, although there is some sort of connection service on a seasonal basis. However, the connections do not get you anywhere near Yellowstone NP.
See the Amtrak map for details: https:/…Natl-System-Timetable-0317.pdf
