Fargo to Rushmore

Hi, I am planning for a weekend trip from Fargo to Mt Rushmore, some time mid Oct 07. I know the schedule is going to be very tight and the drive is about 600 miles. I heard the drive is extremely bad, dangerous as we will be passing by the Native Americans reservations... There are also hundreds of miles of open fields of grass, and if our car breaks down, we will be stuck in the middle of nowhere!

I have checked out the fllight from Fargo to Rapid City, $320 per person, which is not cheap either. Is driving the best option? Any comments will be much appreciated! Thanks!

I really want to see Mt Rushmore!

Oh dear, you are still thinking about Cowboys and Indians.

Well the drive is not dangerous, not bad and the only problem may be to stay awake. Its a long days drive but certainly doable. If you should take I94 to Medora, maybe see Th. Roosevelt NP and then drive scenic us85 all the way to Spearfish. Maybe stay for the night. Then continue on Spearfish Canyon road (sd14A) to Lead and the beautiful drive on us385 to Mount Rushmore. On your way back to Fargo you might drive the all interstate streches I90 and I29 and visit Badlands NP on your way. Many things to see in the Black Hills besides Mount Rushmore but for a weekend trip maybe try:

Friday: Fargo-Medora-Spearfish. 9 hours minimum.

Saturday: All day Blackhills, stay Hill City or around.

Sunday: Drive back to Fargo using the interstates (also 9 hours at least)

Try to stay a little longer, you won't be disappointed.

Do not worry about breaking down. Little chance on that and you will not be the only car on this drive.

Unless you have a poor car, you won't have any trouble with this drive. One should not worry at all about passing through Native American Reservations...why so much paranoia? You could definitely take I29 to Sioux Falls and then take I90 to the Black Hills, therefore you will have interstate highways to travel on the whole way. Agreed that its a very boring drive, but not dangerous. And there are towns all along the way and a cell phone will get you a tow truck. Save the plane fare, drive there and enjoy all that the Black Hills have to offer.

The only danger on the reservations is if they have a casino...always the risk of losing money if you visit one. ;)

Otherwise avoid the freeway where possible unless you need to cover miles quickly. The transition from long grass to short grass prairie (and to almost desert) is amazing and unlike anything near Singapore except maybe the Australian Outback. But towns are frequent and the people very friendly. The previously suggest I-94 route then US 85 is a great compromise between speed and scenery. You will never be more than 20-30 miles from a populated place and the roads are all well maintained.

Thanks a lot guys! You have definitely given me lots of confidence to drive to Rushmore. I have driven a lot in US actually, but just wasnt sure about the Northen American area, especially after being frightened by a friend's friend who's staying in South Dakota!

I dont think i can make it in a day to Rushmore on Fri itself. Will only be landing at Fargo at 1030am. But will start our drive immediately. We will probably spend a night mid way. Any town that is worth staying along the way?

Medora in North Dakota would be a good place to stop if you are going that way.... if you are going down I29, I would suggest something near Sioux Falls to break up your trip.

Fargo south to Sioux Falls, SD on I-29 = 3 1/2 hrs. Then east from Sioux Falls on I-90 = 5 hrs. to Rapid City (even with a short gas and bathroom break). I drive the speed limit and these time frames are pretty close. When you get to Rapid City, you will have gained an hr. as you are on Mt. time. You'll roll in at approx. 7 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. with a lunch break and a potty break in between in between. What in the heck did your friend's friend experience here in good ol' SD? WE love it here, can travel to Denver in 10 hrs., we have a cabin at Terry Peak near Deadwood = 5 hrs., 3 hours to Omaha, NE, 4 hrs. to Cornhusker games in Lincoln, NE and 4 to 41/2 hrs. to Mpls.: plays, hockey, fine dining, great shopping, Twins baseball, Vikings football. We have great schools, 4 seasons (and some of us 50 yr. olds like the snow - as we ski and ice skate). I do think I would enjoy the northern route for scenery though. Spearfish is a great town. I have never driven that route but I have met Native Americans from Standing Rock Indian Reservation, and from the Cheyenne Indian Reservation in northern S.D. and I don't know that I would be afraid to travel through. There are wonderful, loving, honest, dependable, friendly Native Americans all over the world. Twenty yrs. ago my husband did business in Martin, SD on the Rosebud Reservation. I took my 2 yr. old to the city park, sat on a blanket to wait for him to finish his business. The Native Americans did not think I was unusual, I did not fear the others at the park, they did not pay much attention to me - just like anywhere!!! We rent to a Native American educated woman in Mitchell, SD. Just yesterday my black lab came home with a "dog foot print" bandana that she had given my dog who visits that rental property on occasion. Very giving people. Sorry, I just had to share!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
