Visiting Rapid city and around, alone?

Hello everyone,

I plan to make a stay of 5 days in Rapid city and i am a woman travelling alone. I think that i will not rent a car but i will stay at a downtown hotel and will book some bus tours. I was wondering if the city was safe and if the bus tours will be enough interesting and nice? I wish to visit the Black Hills, Mt Rushmore, Crazy horse, Custer park, the Badlands and wounded knee, Devil's tower,...

Any advice will be appreciated. Thank you very much!

Good afternoon-

I work at a hotel in Rapid City.

There are a couple of tour companies in the area but chances of you getting to see all that you have listed aren’t great. That’s not to say that tours are great. I have listed one below that does tours to a lot of the places you’d like to go, but they do have a two person minimum.

Rapid City is a town of about 65,000 people and is relatively safe. I would have little fear walking around downtown at night. My hotel is Americas Best Value Inn we are located close to the mall off Interstate 90 at exit 58, only about 1.5 miles from down town. Hope that gives you a little more information about your trip to South Dakota.

You may be able to squeeze one or two or your sights in with a tour, but you will definitely want a car if you plan to visit Devil's Tour and Custer State Park. Maybe book a tour for a day or two (if you can) then rent a car for two or three days.

And downtown Rapid is fairly safe; if you want to enjoy some of the shopping and restaurants within walking distance (especially if you don't have a car) downtown is the place to be. I'd only stay at a hotel along the interstate if you rent a car.

You will be safe traveling alone in Rapid City. Downtown is a nice and safe enviornment for all.

Depending on how you like to do your sight-seeing is how I would plan your trip. Definitely check out the tour bus options to see what all they include/price.

Staying downtown you will have the convenience of restaurants and shopping, site seeing and plenty of things to do and see. Right downtown is the City of Presidents (all of the street corners have a bronze statue of a late president).
