Hi there, I am doing a USA road trip in May 2019 and part of that trip is driving from Sioux City SD to Fargo ND. I am not looking to necessarily take the fastest route, but I am looking for ideas on any points of interest or scenic aspects that I should consider stopping at on the route.
To give you some perspective we would enjoy having say 3 stops along the way for morning snack - coffee stop / lunch / afternoon snack – coffee stop. Things like quirky diners, pretty towns and the like that are well known to the locals (for great coffee / milk shakes / key lime pie / lemon meringue pie / burgers or any other food treats) and truly American as we are Aussies looking to discover real America. We also love looking around the odd souvenir shop looking for novelty licence plates which I collect and other unique and original things.
I'd also like to get some scenic options instead of driving on motorways all day as long as it does not add too much time to the journey. Maybe add 1-2 hours maximum to overall journey. Might need to end up a balance between driving part on Interstate and part on scenic roads, so happy for you experts to throw up lots of options and please let me know if you have actually driven these routes or whether it's something you have heard about.
I don't mind quick photo stops either for waterfalls, views, scenic outlooks etc but must be only a short walk maybe 5 minutes max from where car is parked (no hiking).
I will have a normal car with my wife.
We will have 2 nights in Fargo so we don’t need time to actually see anything when we arrive in Fargo as we can do that the following day.
