We will be in San Angelo just before New Years this year. What is there do do that might be interesting at that time of year? Are there nice shopping areas, a vital downtown or art co-ops? Any good museums other Western highlights to see there? Any good steak houses?

Firstly, who is 'we'....a couple, whole family, with kids? That might help determine what your interests might be.

Did you already check the Chamber website? Look at that. As well, email them to send you a tourism catalog or brochures...or they may offer a PDF format.

Take a look at http://www.texashighways.com you can search articles and events by region

You can order the entire Texas catalog here or find San Angelo in the PDF formatted on line catalog

http://www.traveltex.com

Have you already reviewed their visitor's bureau webpage or Google for "Things to Do' ...of course there will be more events added closer to DEC.

Historic Fort Concho

Google 'downtown San Angelo'...there is a useful website

Thanks, these suggestions and links will get me started. We are a couple, who love scenic auto touring, Western culture, local art co-ops and unique shopping. We also love a great meal, steak houses?

I actually have the wonderful Texas booklet that they sent along with a road map. I was also hoping for some local insights that may not be listed in the regular tourist guides.

for restaurants/other things a main street/drag is Chadbourne Street

3 such places are The Grille, Cork& Pig, Tthe Pearl Ice House.

just down from the Pearl is a Mexican food place that supposedly serves one of the best steaks in SA

Unfortunately, my friend is not a steak person so she did not offer any alternative for steak..Based on TA reviews I would skip Zenter's Daughter steakhouse.

Look at the top 15 restaurants here on TA and that will steer you in a good direction. And of course, ask the locals when you arrive.

You can try Texas Roadhouse for a steak which is probably acceptable but just know that it is a chain and 'Texas' in name only.....its not based anywhere near Texas.

There are 2 or 3 wineries near SA..no experience but Texas wines are getting some respect so try SA wines or regional wines from Lubbock Llano Estacado, Cap Rock

Are you driving from Dallas, Lubbock, San Antonio or Abilene area? Lubbock is 180 miles away which would have many things to see/do but that is probably not on your radar.

Hope this helps a little as there is not much activity on the SA board

and do watch your speed in the small west Texas towns...esp when approaching or passing through

If you're looking for a steak house to eat at, you might try Lowake Steak House. It's about a 30-minute drive from San Angelo, but it's one of the better ones and easily the most well-known around.

If you are driving from Montana, you might consider stopping at Palo Dura Canyon State Park near Amarillo or Caprock Canyons State Park. Both beautiful places where you can just drive or hike. If you want to spend the night near Caprock Canyons State Park, there is a delightful little historic hotel in Turkey, Tx. Palo Dura has some little cabins that are usually available that time of year. The weather is unpredictable, of course, but usually lots of sunshine in both places.

Bfrasure,

Thanks for the information. Duro Canyon and Caprock are now on our list. The historic hotel looks neat. That is the B&B in Turkey in the brick building?

If you go to Pearl Icehouse get the Cowboy Sushi as an appetizer. Then order another one because you will have accidentally ate the whole thing yourself!

Check out Old Fort Concho, Chicken Farm Art Center and the Museum of Fine Arts. Here is a link to the city site: http://www.visitsanangelo.org/index.php
