visiting James Madison U, where to eat and what to do

Where is a good place to eat dinner to give my daughter a good feel for JMU? Also we may have a few hours free in the late afternoon. Any suggestions as to where to go prior to dinner? Thanks in advance.

Close to JMU, on US 11 is a small visitors center. There is also the Quilting Museum. Walk around the Court House and check out some of the specialty shops or Food Joints, Restaurants (cheap to expensive, alcohol , to no alcohol) There is no shortage of Named Chain Restaurants in Harrisonburg. There are also some pretty good family owned as well.

The Harrisonburg visitor Center is open every day 9-5 There are maps and lots of brochures on the area. Plus the staff can help you out with any and all information. There are also two free museums, Rocktown gift shoppe and New Leaf Pastry Kitchen in the Visitor Center! There are over 25 locally owned restaurants in downtown and local shops.

Try Rocktown Bites Food Tours!!

Visit our website at Rocktownbites.com! These super-fun walking tours begin at 2:00 p.m. every Saturday (ALSO, Thursday tours in June and July) and last approximately 2.5 hours. Your tour guide will take you to seven unique restaurants, food shops, and local businesses to sample food, drink (including craft beer and Virginia wines), and get behind-the-scenes dish from restaurateurs and chefs. Enjoy the local food culture and learn about what else makes Harrisonburg, Virginia so charming.

There's a number of Amish stores down Route 11 towards Dayton.

They may not be open when you come but if you're a big reader then you'll certainly want to visit the Green Valley Book Fair. I've been 3 or 4 times and have always been able to buy 5 or 6 books for under 20$. It's just off the exit for Bridgewater about 5 miles down 81 from Harrisonburg.

Local Chop and Grill House for dinner. Kline's Dairy Bar for an ice cream. Stay in Harrisonburg and just walk around campus and downtown to get a feel for JMU. Go Dukes!
