Driving BOI to Thames New Years Day

Title says it all........would this be a bad idea? Is traffic likely to be an issue on New Years Day or will everyone hopefully be home recovering from partying the night before?

Any advice appreciated.

Hi Jane,

Yes, many will be stopping home to recover. But there will be the odd few who believe their driving skills are OK, inspite of a night's bash. Be wary of these drivers on the roads. In general the roads are quiet around 8:30am - 9am when you set off. Paihia has fireworks on NYE. Nearer to Auckland will be busier with NY day sales starting, and people driving to the beaches.

Take your time, and have plenty of rest stops. There will be places for coffee and something to eat, with Wellsford and Warkworth being popular stops on the way to Auckland. The Southern motorway has service exits, and petrol will be available on NY Day also.

great info from Frangapani (as always); I'll add - make sure that the driver is totally sober - no lingering grog from the night before; and stick to the speed limits - xmas/ New Years period there is zero tolerance from the Police when it comes to both drinking and speeds.

Happy and safe travels to you.

Great advice but we are very cautious drinkers when we know we will be driving. One of us will have to be designated driver NYE anyway as we are staying around 15 mins inland from Paihia but want to drive in for the evening (traffic allowing) and see fireworks

Normal drive time is around 3 1/2 hours Paihia to Auckland and a further 1 1/2 hours to Thames ie around 5 hours. Allow yourself another 90 minutes plus stops so dont be in a hurry. You may encounter little traffic on the road but I am anticipating bumper to bumper traffic south of Auckland all the way to Thames. You will hit Auckland around lunchtime when most holidays doing the second week away will be on the road. Keep your cool and just go with the flow
