Traffic/ Rush Hour

We will be coming through from Willliamsburg to Virginia Beach on I-64/264 on a Thursday evening in two weeks. We are coming from Charlottesville down but we are going to stop in Williamsburg for dinner to wait out Hampton Roads/Newport News traffic. We are estimating that we would get to Williamsburg around 4pm. How late should we wait to leave Williamsburg to get to Virginia Beach boardwalk and avoid rush hour traffic? What is the average rush hour time frame in Newport News/Hampton Roads all the way to Virginia Beach?

Unless there is an alternate route to get from Williamsburg to the beach.

1. Re: Traffic/ Rush Hour

Rush hour starts when the shipyard and naval base workers get off, around 3:30 and is mostly over by 6.

The key will be which bridge tunnel to take. There are electronic signs on I-64 that show how many minutes to Virginia Beach via 64 (Hampton Roads Bridge tunnel) or 664 (Monitor Merrimac Bridge Tunnel) and another sign showing how many minutes to Outer Banks.

If you download the WAZE app to your phone, that will give you real time traffic info, and the app is integrated with Virginia DOT accident and construction info. It helps get you around slow downs.

There is construction in Newport News around the Fort Eustis exit but it's short stretch.

Have fun!
