Contrary to common assumption, Orcas island is not named after the whale. Orcas is a coincidental abbreviation of the name of Horcasitas, the viceroy of Mexico who sent an expedition here in 1791. That's who the island was named for. Orca whales can be seen off the coast here on San Juan but not off Orcas or Lopez. As you can see on maps of this area such as at …blogspot.com/-yTk5iWXU6bk/…2Bcopy001.jpg you can see that the deep water of Haro Straits and the nearby Strait of Juan de Fuca lie right off the coast of San Juan only so that's why we see the orca whales pass by here.

Because San Juan is a closer location to depart for to see orca normally we have more companies over here that are in this business. Orcas island does have a few and you can find them at https:/…whale-watching Since all boats are in communication with each other all the time the only difference really is in the size of the boat you are on insofar as comfort and speed (faster boats have more of a chance of being able to get to where the orca are and back in the time allotted for a tour).

I recommend watching them from shore on San Juan island, but if you MUST use a tour, Deer Harbor charters has a good reputation.
