We're driving from Northern Michigan to Bloomington, MN on Sept. 26th and stopping for one night on or near Route 29. Is there anything different, non-chain hotel, something resort-like, near water??
family or couple?
if you route through Hwy. 8 instead of Hwy. 29 (more scenic too I think) and you're a couple Canoe Bay is very unique, it's also high end so you may or may not be interested but it's worth mentioning
Also Chetek in general is a lake town and would have other resorts. http://www.chetek.com/resorts.htm
Eagle River, Minocqua and Three Lakes up north would be nice areas, but if you want to stick to Hwy. 29 they won't work.
Edited: 9 years agoI'd really call this northern Wisconsin, though technically you're correct. We tend to think of anything Green Bay and north as Up Nort. If you're interested in writing another thread with that title you may get some more responses. My first thought was you were interested in maybe the Oshkosh or even Madison area. The MN forums may have posts from travelers who have made similar trips.
It's a less populated area, so you may not get many responses. Sorry, I haven't spent much time in the area, but Hatch is a good source for info. The Eau Claire thread may have some suggestions too.
Edited: 9 years agoFrozen tundra The OP stated pretty clear their route will be Hwy 29, not sure how you would get Oshkosh or Madison area.
I didn't know where Hwy 29 was when I first read it.I found it after bringing up a map.
Thanks....that being said, should we stick to Hwy 29 or go Hwy 8 like hatchpal4u mentioned? Anyone have knowledge of these two routes??
Hwy 8 is going to be more country roads and more scenic , where Hwy 29 to me is one of the most boring stretches of highway between Green Bay and Minnesota.
Hwy. 8 feels more northwoodsy and quiet and interesting places along the way whereas not as many places of interest along the Hwy. 29 corridor. Wausau has Rib Mtn. and Chippewa Falls has Leinenkugel's but there's not much else. I have done this route many times as well as the Hwy. 8 route. The Hwy. 8 route would be my preferred route for the reasons above. I hope this and 1sharpedge's comments helped to clarify. Either route works to get you where you're going and works depending on what you're looking for in a route.
If you take route 29 around Wausau there are several exits convenient to the downtown. We recommend our out of town visitors stay at the Jefferson Inn www.jeffersonstreetinn.com. Its within walking distance to the WI river, shopping and several very good restaurants. During September the Birds in art exhibit in on display at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art museum. This is a must see when in town. Good Luck!
we missed the Birds in Art last year, glad to hear it's a yearly exhibit. Thanks for sharing.
if you're ok with rustic, there's a coupla places along the route 64 corridor, which is between US-8 and 29, but still far enough north to be Up Nort (ie-in the Northwoods).....
wildmans have rustic cabins, or fairly luxurious cabins, depending on how much you're willing to pay.... located right on the scenic peshtigo river, just off highway C.
a little further west along C is this:
the waubee might be more what you're looking for....
but, just a coupla miles south of route 64 is this:
http://www.bearpawoutdoors.com/
route 64 is a major east-west route, and the bearpaw is only a coupla miles south of it, near the town of langlade..... so, of the 3 mentioned, it's location gives you the easiest, most direct access along your route at large.... thing is, it's not directly on the wolf river, but you can go here to have a scenic bite:
http://www.wildwolfinn.com/menu.htm
the wild wolf inn (motel) is also an option, but the rooms are a bit old, but if you're ok with that, then go for it....
for the record, i've stayed/eaten at all 4 places, so i have 1st hand knowledge of each....
