Lake Tahoe one day trip from San Francisco

Hi,

As part of my family vacations we want to know Lake Tahoe. Is it recommendable a one day trip from San Francisco by December 28th?? I dont' know how is weather in that part of the year... I know we must have wheel chains.

It's about a 4hr drive each way in good weather, and can be much longer in bad weather. It oftens snows in late December.

It's not advisable to try and do it in one day, if you can't spend at least one night there, it's not worth all the driving for a short view of the lake.

Since that's a big holiday, there will be lots of traffic, hotels will be booked well in advance. If you do decide to spend the night, make your reservations as early as possible.

Agree with Simbot, a day trip to Tahoe is not a good idea, its possible if the weather is clear, but any snow could change the scene, especially if you haven't driven in winter weather conditions. Either plan on staying overnight or try on your next trip. If you can't find lodging in Tahoe you can also try the Reno casinos.

I haven't driven in winter weather conditions yet. So I'll reschedule my trip. I friend of mine recommended to me Big Bear Lake, do you know it? Are the weather conditions better than Tahoe?

Big Bear Lake is near Los Angeles, a long way from SF and the same possible weather conditions. I have driven to Tahoe and back in one day to pick up family, but I would not advise doing in on vacation in the winter. Maybe wait until shortly before you are coming and check the weather conditions.

I would not suggest Big Bear unless you are in Southern CA. It is nowhere as scenic as Lake Tahoe. When are you coming and what do you want to see? I am assuming snow since you are a Tica and no snow in your part of the world?

I'm a Tico hahaha

This is my itinerary:

December 26th: Arriving San Francisco

December 27th: Staying San Francisco, maybe go shopping

December 28th: 1-day trip to Lake Tahoe (not recommended in other forum)

December 29th: driving to Las Vegas (I wanted a scenic drive route but by weather is not recommended)

December 30th: go to Grand Canyon West Rim, staying Las Vegas

December 31th: staying Las Vegas

January 1st: moving to San Diego Zoo, pass night at Anaheim

January 2nd: Anaheim, Disneyland

January 3rd: moving to San Francisco

January 4th: staying in San Francisco

January 5th: end of trip, return Costa Rica

So, with a reschedule, Big Bear could be on January 1st, San Diego Zoo on Jan 2nd, Disneyland on Jan 3rd and moving to San Francisco on Jan 4th....

Lo siento! You have a baby on your pix... so assume Tica! BTW- My spouse lived a few months of the year in Guanacaste for a few years. I visited before all the new hotels were built.

Still not sure the goal of your trip to the mountains. To see or play in the snow? Snowboard or ski? I would say yes, skip Tahoe if that is your itinerary. If you are thinking Big Bear on 1/1, this would be a day trip on your way from Vegas to SD? That is one long day. You could conceivably to from Vegas to Big Bear/Arrowhead, then LA. You can stay in the mountain, but prices will be high and not sure you can one one night because it is New Years Eve and most places have a 2-3 nights min.

Guanacaste beaches are amazing....

Mountains is to see snow for first time. As you said, Las Vegas-Big Bear-Anaheim on 1/1, SD on 1/2, Disneyland on 1/3 and return to San Francisco on 1/4. Is that right?

Sure you can do it, but do you really want all that driving? Is the baby in your picture still a baby and will be on this trip? The Big Bear area mountains does not get nearly as much snow as the "real" mountains further up north. You should probably check the weather conditions as it gets closer when you are in Vegas.

If just seeing snow is your main goal, Wrightwood is just right off I-15 and is on your way from Vegas to Anaheim. Just a short detour up the mountain. If there is snow, it would be your best bet with your timeframehttp://www.mthigh.com/mountain/directions.
