Difference between San Diego Zoo and Safari Park???

Does anyone know what the difference is between the San Diego Zoo and the Safari Park? Me and my husband don't really like zoo's, we have been to a few and we feel as if they are all the same so we don't want to go to the ordinary zoo. But we were wondering how the safari park is different to the zoo? Does anyone think it is better? Or is it pretty much like another version of the zoo? We just dont like walking around looking at animals...we like to be able to interact with them etc

Quick:

Zoo - animals are kept in small cages for you to see

Safari Park - animals are kept in a mock natural setting. No "fense" or cage bars. You sit in a small tram/train or truck to go see them in their "natural" habitat.

As was mentioned before the Safari has most of its animals in a huge "Safari Like area. The tram is ok but to make the most of it you should upgrade to one of the vehicle rides and that is more fun and takes you inside the large enclosure. Don't know if you have kids but if they are young the tram is a great place to snooze off in rather than watch animals

The Safari Park is a 40 min. drive NE of the city of San Diego.

As mentioned, most of the animals are in large open enclosures like the savannahs of Africa. You will not be able to interact with the animals unless you book one of the extra activities/tours.

The San Diego Zoo also has large natural enclosures for their animals.

I would not describe any of them as "cages" but they are smaller than the open ones at the Safari Park. We find that some of the animals WILL interact with visitors even while being separated from them but you can go into the children's area and interact with them more. In addition you can also buy one of the extra experiences which would allow closer interactions with animals not in the children's area.

Remember that these are not theme parks!

Their mission is to educate folks about animals and to help breed endangered species.

You indicate in your other post that you are not hiring a car. Getting to the Safari Park is nigh-on impossible without a car.
