One day visit recommendations!

Hello all, trapped with a reservation in Thornburg this Saturday and the event we booked this for is cancelled. Want to make the best of it, looking for recommendations! My husband is disabled so would need a wheelchair for walks longer than a couple blocks. Can you recommend any scenic drives <1hr, easy access nature areas or water views, love signs, good eats? TIA!

ret2go83,

As much as I enjoy visiting Fredericksburg, it would not be that easy to negotiate with mobility issues. Thornburg is about an hour West of Northern Neck, there are a number of places to see. There are a number of very good eateries in the area.

George Washington Birthplace Colonial Beach

Historic Christ Church Irvington

Kilmarnock Museum

There is a Natural Preserve Area in Heathville, not sure about accessibility.

You might look into this one. Sat. a.m. may be passing showers but the rest they say will be sunny...Sat and Sun.

Check out the great accessible features...not only of this park but others for future reference. This is not too far from where you'll be. There is the beautiful lake with accessible concrete paths near it, etc. They are open dawn to dusk. Give them a call to fine tune. They say they don't allow motorized chairs but DO allow electric wheelchairs and electric scooters that are federally defined as wheelchairs. A number is 800-933-PARK.

PS The link is showing Lake Anna State Park scenes. That's the one I'm talking about.

Hello. Consider Fredericksburg for a visit. It has the city dock area for river views(which you can drive to and park at), very good restaurants, Fredericksburg battlefield(see the stone wall and then drive to the other end of the battlefield to where Jacksons' men drove off the Union attack), which can be done with limited walking, Chatham manor, a colonial mansion with limited walking, great views of the 'Burg, and a car park close to the building, and Kenmore mansion, owned by the married sister of George W, which has 1 of the 100 most beautiful rooms in America. Parking for Kenmore is on the street right in front of the building, but you do go from room to room on the inside tour. Hope this helps, and enjoy.

We recently took the bus "trolley" tour of the city, departing regularly from the Fredericksburg Visitors Center downtown (not far from the train station). Very informative. Our guide explained the Colonial history and famous founding-fathers with connections there, and later how the city was right in the middle of a Civil War battle, and leaving several historic buildings with imbedded cannonballs still visible.

Still further north, is the colorful and inter-active U.S. Marine Corps Museum at Quantico, it's free of charge and easy to find.

The beautiful, Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens, is just 30 miles south of Thornburg, on the north side of Richmond near I-95.
