bears in S Dakota

Planning a trip in Sept and want to hike a lot. Do I need to worry about bears?

The only bears you are likely to see in the Black Hills are at Bear Country USA in Rapid City. The following link from the Keystone Chamber of Commerce should reassure you about the lack of bears in the BH: keystonechamber.com/item/284-wolves-and-moos…

Bear sightings are extremely rare in the Black Hills, carry bear spray if you still have concerns.

I asked about this when we were in Custer a few weeks ago, and I was told don't worry about bears, as there are almost none around, but keep an eye out for mountain lions instead, which are more prevalent.

Don't worry about the mountain lions. They've been hunted for a few years now and not many are left and the ones that are avoid people. Lived here in the Black Hills for decades and have never seen one.
