Excursions

We are going on Royal Caribbean Land/Sea Cruise in July 2012. One of our stops is Skagway. There are 3 excursions we are considering and I need help deciding which one to use.

1) SK49 - White Pass Railway & Historic City Highlights

2) SK01 - White Pass Scenic Railway

3) SK43 - Klondike Summit & Historic City Tour

There is a considerable difference in price between a bus only tour (3) and the others which include rail (1) & (2). Are the options with rail included worth the difference in price?

Any help would be extremely helpful!!

Ditch the historic city tour........you can walk the entire town area........go to the Klondike National Park Service's visitor center, watch their free movie for an orientation prior to walking the town area and reading the informational plaques on the historic buildings.......the tour may also include a drive out to the old cemetery which is about a mile out of town and an easy walk.......

The White Pass Railway has exceptional scenery and is the most popular excursion on the cruise ship circuit......you can book it the day of as you get off the ship, the railway ticket office is right next door to the Park Service......that way you can decide if the weather will be better for the morning or the afternoon trip........

In addition to the very good advice above from mombear, if you decide to take the WPYR opt for the longest available rail trip, not just the run to the top of the Pass and back. I also highly recommend booking the extended road trip into the Yukon as far as Emerald Lake with either Dyea Dave of Chilkoot Charters, not through the ship.

"Dyea Dave of Chilkoot Charters"

Big whoops. Typo and should have been 'OR' not 'of'.

mombear also mentioned the National Park office, we stopped here and got great walking trail maps and did alot of hiking in Skagway before out train ride.

Beautiful hikes!

The National Park Service offers free ranger led walking tours of Skagway several times a day. These hour long tours are probably better than anything you could pay for through your cruise line. You can pick up tickets for the walking tour at the NPS office.

To add to Mombear's great comment, the White Pass & Yukon Railway makes two stops in Skagway. The first stop is at the cruise ship docks, for passengers who have purchased their train trip through the cruise line. The second stop is a few blocks inland, next to the NPS office, for people who purchased their train trip directly through the Railway.

People who buy their tickets through the railway are in separate coaches. We booked through the railway for a mid-June trip to the summit, and our coach was just 1/3 full. It looked like the coaches assigned to the cruise ship passengers were all full; it was nice to have some extra room to move from one side of our coach to the other.

As Mombear said, there is a reason why the White Pass & Yukon is the most popular shore excursion. I took the trip with my train and wildlife loving dad, and my less enthusiastic mom. All of us agreed afterward that the WP&Y was one of the two or three highlights of our trip!

Suggest you go to your personalized cruise ship booking website and read their tour descriptions as the codes you have given us are meaningless.

From my visits to Skagway on Princess Cruises, they offer an interesting tour which we always enjoyed, and that is the Bennett Experience. It includes the White Pass & Yukon Route up over the pass. At Fraser Canadian customs greets you to check passports. From there you contiue on to Bennett and get off for lunch in the former railway depot. After that you are given time to explore the Klondike Gold Rush site, a Canadian National Historic Site. Then you reboard the train and follow Lake Bennett all the way into Carcross. From there you are bussed back to Skagway. Other cruise lines may offer the itinerary in reverse. The cost of this tour is quite expensive, but sure is better than the one almost all take to the summit and back
