first time visit

Husband and I are visiting during the week in mid-September, primarily to visit the zoo. Debating on staying either downtown Omaha or in Cedar Rapids. We'd really like to stay in the city, but are apprehensive about safety downtown (love to walk and explore). We have reservations at Even hotel downtown, but other option is Fairfield downtown, or Hampton in Cedar Rapids. Read that the location of Even hotel might not be the safest? Thanks for your input, looking forward to visiting.

You posted this in Omaha but are speaking of Cedar Rapids which is several hrs from Omaha. Don’t know how to reply!

So sorry, meant Council Bluffs. Doing a lot of traveling, so got the cities mixed up.

Cedar Rapids is hours away from Omaha, don't reserve a room there if you'd rather be in Council Bluffs.

Sorry for all the confusion. We are coming to Omaha to visit the zoo. Have reservations at Even hotel, but were wondering if Council Bluffs is a better choice. We are concerned about safety issues, esp at the Even hotel location.

We are stopping in Cedar Rapids on our return trip, so somehow got the two mixed up.

Take a look at Hilton Garden Inn. One block from the Capital District and two blocks from the Old Market. Lots of places to eat and drink either direction. Easy shot down 10th St to the zoo.

Thursday next, thank you for the reply. I actually did check that hotel, but the rate is $15 more than Even, and they also charge $15 for parking (free at Even). My original question, is if that Even hotel is in a safe location, and if it is safe for us to walk and explore that neighborhood. That is why we were considering Council Bluffs, we are not fond of big cities, and sometimes don't feel safe. Thanks again.

The Even hotel is a very nice minimalist, wellness-centric venue. Nice little bar and a few food options. I stayed once last year and liked it. That being said, I would not call the neighborhood pedestrian-friendly. It is about 10 blocks or so from Midtown Crossing , which has dining and shopping options- but I would drive. Three hours free parking with validation. Also about 10 blocks from the Old Market. Walkable, but not very interesting tourist-wise. I would not want to walk back to the hotel in the evening, but the Metro bus stops on the adjacent corner. If it were me, and had just a couple of days in town, I would ante-up the 30 dollars and stay near the Old Market.

Hampton Inn in CB- Nothing wrong with it, but nothing nearby except the Ameristar Casino, and some industrial facilities.

Have a good trip.

If you want to stay in Omaha, I'd pick down town. Safer, better police presence. And everything is in walking distance. I've never stayed at the Even, but I know the neighborhood. Several flop-house hotels in the area. Lower income residential a few blocks south. Public defenders office one block away. And if you plan on walking down town (Old Market) to explore, the walk back to the Even is all uphill !!. As far as Council Bluffs, would only stay at hotel attached to a casino for security purposes. If you don't want to stay down town, the hotels at Mid-Town Crossing would be a relatively close option with activities and restaurants right there.

If your driving the Even hotel is fine. You can drive downtown in under 2 minutes and use their parking so your not having to walk anywhere. The area isn’t bad but isn’t great because there are some low income units in the area but if your driving it’s not anywhere excessively unsafe. I’ve walked the area many times but I wouldn’t recommend going home from the old market or midtown as a few blocks further than comfortable to walk. But council bluffs can be spotty, some motel/hotels are dumps and others fine. There are many area not far from downtown. I’ve personally stayed in the Sonesta Suites (72nd and Dodge) which is like great studio apartments right in midtown (10 min from downtown) or there are options in Midtown. I would just avoid 402 hotel or rodeway inn. Honestly you’ll be fine at that the Even just drive at night. There are options right in Old Market: upscale Magnolia Hotel, the Embasst Suites, Hampton, Hotel Deco, Marriott and Hilton. All are right in walking range of Old Market
