July Trip to Newport & environs w/ kids & grandma

My nearly-90 Mom wants me to plan a July weekend trip w/ the grandkids (6 and 11) that would include the merry-go-round at Watch Hill, a good taste of Newport, a visit to Little Compton (and/or some other cute spot), and maybe also RISD and/or the zoo that's near providence (latter kind of a low priority, I think).

Her stamina is pretty good (she manages if she can find places to sit along the way), and the kids are good travelers too (they like tromping around museums and such), but I'm looking for recommendations on how best to manage/focus such a trip.

Specifically:

- Recommendations on where to stay that's reasonably centrally located relative to the places we want to see. (Providence? Newport? Someplace else? (Note: Quaint is nice, but with kids and a grandma who needs to nap, we found a generic suite hotel worked best.)

- Recommendations on what approach might work best in Newport that would interest the kids most, and not exhaust my Mom w/ too much walking.

- Recommendations for any other multi-generation activities in the area that we haven't considered.

Thanks in advance.

Staying in Warwick wouldn't be a bad spot to consider. A place like the Residence Inn is nice, reasonable, has suites and a pool for the kids. It will situate you between Newport and Providence. There's plenty of child friendly restaurants around that hotel as well.

In Newport, there's plenty of benches along Thames Street for your mom to sit along the way. The kids will probably enjoy the nearby wharf areas most. There are plenty of spots in Newport for your mom to sit and take a break. You could all take a harbor cruise which is fun for all ages. Brenton Point State Park along Ocean Drive is a great spot for mom to relax and enjoy the ocean views. It's also a good spot for the kids to fly some kites as well. There will be plenty of excitement going on in Newport in July to keep you all happy.

Waterfire in Providence is a very nice, relaxing multi-generational event that takes place along the river on select Friday and Saturday nights in the summer. The 2009 schedule should be released soon. Planning your July trip when a Waterfire is planned would be advantageous. I wouldn't dismiss Roger Williams Zoo so fast. It's a great place to bring the kids and it would only be a 10 minute drive from the Residence Inn.

Hope this helps you out some. Feel free to ask anymore questions you may have.
