June 2018 - 9 day trip

June 2018 - 9 day trip

Hello! Flying in to Bozeman, MT June 23, staying 3 days at Mammoth Springs, then going to Canyon Lodge for 3 days. Then to Jackson Hole for final 3 days flying out of Jackson Hole. My husband me and our 15 year old son. We are pretty active family, who love the outdoors, kayaking, fishing, etc but never been to the area. What would you say are the mist do’s while in each area?

As far as summer activities in Jackson Hole, consider these:

eat a great meal of elk or bison

There are a lot of good restaurants in Jackson, but my personal favorites are: within walking distance of the center of town: Merry Piglets (Mexican), Silver Dollar Bar (bison burgers and hearty bar food), Cowboy Bar Steakhouse (steaks), Blue Lion (fish and lamb chops), and Snake River Grill (special occasions); and

a short drive from the center of town: The Granary (the view at sunset), Gun Barrel (steaks), and Dornan's (pizza on the roof overlooking the Snake River with a dead-on view of the Tetons).

attend the free Hootenanny at Dornan's

take the tram to the top of Rendezvous Mountain (10,450')

have a drink on The Deck at the Couloir restaurant

jump off the mountain in a paraglider

climb a mountain on the via feratta

visit the Raptor Center in Wilson

climb to the top of the Grand Teton

or take the Snow King chair lift for outstanding views of Jackson and Jackson Hole

drive the road to the top of Signal Mountain for great views of the valley

take a drive through the park and surrounding areas

hike in GTNP

and watch for wildlife

wade in the warm water of String Lake

horseback ride

ride a stagecoach at the town square

take a breakfast, dinner, or scenic cruise on Jackson Lake

or rent a motor boat, canoe or kayak

attend the Jackson rodeo (Wed and Sat nights from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, plus July 4, plus Fridays starting June 30).

watch the shootout on the town square (Mon-Sat at 6:00pm, Memorial Day-Labor Day);

attend a performance at the Center for the Arts

bike on valley and park pathways

jacksonholewy.net/summer_recreation/biking.p… (scroll down to maps)

attend the dinner-theater at the Jackson Hole Playhouse

stroll around the Jackson Hole farmers' market (Saturday mornings at the town square)

take a scenic float trip on the Snake River in Grand Teton NP or south of the park (I suggest selecting a trip INSIDE the park)

or a whitewater trip in the Snake River Canyon

soak in a hot spring south of Jackson

or in the nearby Kelly Warm Springs (note: GTNP recommends not using this warm spring due to brain-eating bacteria in the water)

soar over the Tetons in a hot air balloon

or in a glider

tour the National Museum of Wildlife Art

and the Historical Museum of Jackson Hole

catch a Grand Teton Music Festival concert at Walk Festival Hall at Teton Village

take a free walking tour of downtown Jackson

do some world-class fly fishing

ride the alpine slide, play alpine mini golf and enjoy other activities at Snow King

stop in for drinks and dancing at the Cowboy Bar (free western dance lessons on Thursday nights at 7:30) and, during the summer, a band Monday through Saturday, starting at 9 p.m.

or drinks, dinner and dancing (Tues, Thurs, Fri and Sat nights) at the Silver Dollar Bar

or drinks and dancing at the Stagecoach Bar in nearby Wilson (the famous Stagecoach Band plays from 5:30 to 9:30 Sunday nights and from 9:30 on Thursday)

or drinks and dancing at the raucous Town Square Tavern

or drinks, dinner and music at the Mangy Moose in neaby Teton Village

go to the dinner/music show of the Bar J Wranglers at the Bar J Ranch

or attend another chuck wagon dinner

shoot a variety of firearms at the local gun range (no minimum age)

go to the movies

visit the national fish hatchery

Here is one suggestion but there are many ways to split things up for the Yellowstone portion of your trip:

June 23 Arrive Bozeman, overnight Mammoth. Albright Visitor Center (check with the Rangers on trail conditions - ask about hiking up Mt Washburn as this can be late for snow to melt if it's a heavy snow winter), Walk around Lower and Upper Terraces

24 Head out to Lamar Valley to wildlife watch there and along the Northern Range, then on the way back drop down to see Tower Fall from Tower-Roosevelt Junction. Possible hikes - Beaver Ponds (Mammoth area), Hellroarin', Yellowstone River Picnic Area, Trout Lake. Overnight Mammoth

25 Any interest in driving Beartooth highway? Drive east from Mammoth thru Lamar and out the NE entrance. Drive Beartooth either to Red Lodge for lunch OR turn around at Rock Creek Vista (this will get you thru the very scenic Alpine Meadow areas) If you don't care to make this a drive day then there are plenty of hiking opportunities above. Overnight Mammoth

26 Head east again, south at Tower Junction and consider hiking Mt Washburn this morning. After that head for Canyon. For the afternoon, head over to Norris to do this geyser basin - Back Basin and Porcelain Basins. Overnight Canyon

27 Do the South and North Rims with the Canyon and waterfall overlooks. If you are up early, head down to Hayden Valley to wildlife watch before breakfast, then come back to do the Rim drives. They get busy mid-day. After the rim drives, head back down thru Hayden to Mud Volcano, Fishing Bridge (walk across to look for wildlife) FB Visitor Center, east to Lake Butte Overlook, stop in at Lake Village to see the historic hotel building. Consider hiking Storm Point, Elephant Back, Avalanche Peak. Check conditions at FB Visitor Center. Overnight Canyon

28 Geyser day! Head via Norris and Madison to OF. Start at the Upper Geyser Basin. Walk this area - paths and boardwalks. Get eruption times at the OF Visitor Center. Pop in to the OF Inn to see this historic hotel. Head back the way you came and stop at the smaller geyser basins and scenic side drives. You ~could ~ continue around the lower loop back to Canyon but I see more wildlife going back via Norris so that's the way I go. Overnight Canyon

29 If you want to fish on Yellowstone Lake you could consider a fishing tour this AM before you head to Grand Tetons. On your way south stop at West Thumb geyser basin.

Here is a link to the day hike page on the official Yellowstone website:
