Itchy sand fly problems at Trat airport

Due to the ferry times from Koh Mak we had a long 5 hr wait in Trat airport. There is very little to do but there was a cafe which we sat outside and had some snacks and drinks in a great and picturesque sitting area. Everything seemed fine until we got to Bangkok and started to itch like crazy!! The whole family has sand fly bites everywhere. We were aware of sand fly problems on the beaches and used coconut oil on our legs which worked quite well, but we never expected to get eaten alive at the airport!! Has anyone else had this problem or know if these are a different type of fly, as these sand flies seem much worse (amount and itchyness) than those on Koh Mak beaches..

I've not seen anyone mention that before. Unlikely to be sand flies, given the location, but may well be some kind of mozzie. I'm flying out of Trat tomorrow lunchtime, so will see if I notice anything biting.

There are lots of different flies that bite, not just sand flies. Or it could have been from before you got to the airport, just a delayed reaction.
