Colectivos for Transportation

I am thinking of staying at the Barcelo Maya Beach Resort but also want to snorkel at Akumal, Cozumel and Puertos Morelos. I have several questions regarding colectivos:

Can I get from Barcelo to Akumal and Puerts Morelos using colectivos and how frequently do they run ?

Would it be possible to take a colectivo to Playa del Carmen, catch the ferry from there to Cozumel, take a taxi to the south end of Cozumel, snorkel for 3 hours and return to Barcelo all in one day?

I have heard that the colectivos travel very fast. Are they safe? Do they have seatbelts? is the road they travel on to the above places a 4 lane divided road with 2 lanes in each direction or is it only a 2 lane road?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Colectivos run along the main highway, which is 2 lanes in each direction. You can hail them on the highway, and they're always running. If you want to go to Playa then Cozumel in one day, it is doable, but get an early start by 8 am. Where you get dropped off is where you can catch one. Don't ever bring luggage or bulky items on the colectivo, and don't get in with wet clothes. Some have seatbelts, some don't. You take your chances.

Dean check your PM post for more stuff . The colectivo stand , Ado bus terminal and the ferry to Coz are all very close to each other in PDC . Leaving from PDC or Tulum or Cancun lets you get on at the first stops of a route and you can pick your seats . You pay on exiting the van . No more than 40 pesos , short ride or maximum . Only buy one way ferry tickets so you can leave on whichever company is quickest for you .

Here is a great article on colectivos - these are large white vans

http://www.travelyucatan.com/collectivo.php

Prices have increased slightly

they may flash their lights at you - then wave your hand to acknowledge pickup

- at Barceló , they will have a stop / area so easy to see

Tell the driver where you want to get off , then pay when you get off

Use pesos (or US Dollars at 10 to 1)

As they stop / start all the time, they don't go as fast as taxis, but fast enough

The stop in Playa is a few blocks from the Coz ferry - see this map

travelyucatan.com/playa_del_carmen_mexico_ma…

At Puerto Morelos and for the Tulum beaches, you will need to take a short taxi ride to the main beach - study the maps I referred to

Going to Puerto Morelos, once you get to the colectivo stop in Playa del Carmen, consider walking to the ADO bus station and taking the larger bus north.

Here's the ferry schedule to Cozumel:

cozumel-tours.com/cozumel-ferry-schedule.htm

From the Barcelo to Puerto Morelos you will have to change colectivo's in Playa - or as CoPilot says take the ADO bus. And they run continually, every 5 - 10 minutes all day until about 10pm.

No matter how you go to Puerto Morelos, you will be dropped by the side of the highway. Grab a few tacos from the convenience mart stand then get a taxi for about 30 pesos to "la playa" to go snorkel. It's a few km to the ocean from the bus/colectivo dropoff.
