Pattaya to Rayong to Chantaburi to Pattaya

Is this a suitable itinerary, ----spending one night in Rayong and two in Chanthaburi city?

If so, are mini buses or bus available? Some detailed help on where they can be booked and boarded would be welcome, please.

Is there enough within easy walking for an elderly couple to pass the time interestingly? Any other comments or suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

Most of the buses east from Bangkok cut out that little corner of places like Pattaya, Rayong, Ban Phe. All these places have buses to them from Bangkok but they don't connect to each other. So anywhere from Pattaya east can generally only be done by minivan, not bus. But once you get to Chantaburi you are back on the main road/transit route and can go west to Bangkok on a bus, and east to Trat on a bus.

I think there are a couple of odd buses doing the Pattaya eastwards route but they start very early morning.

So anyway all your transfers will most likely be by minivan. You can turn up at the bus station by yourself but be careful because some cities in Thailand have more than one bus station e.g. Rayong has an old bus station and new bus station. The old bus station only serves local routes (e.g. Ban Phe) with songtaews and a few minivans (no buses), the new bus station serves other provinces and Bangkok with buses and vans.

It might be easier to book your transfer with your hotel or a local travel agent, who will charge a small commission. The minivan in that case should pick you up direct from your hotel.

For completeness, in case anyone resurrects this query;-

I found that taxis will take from Pattaya to Rayong for a haggled price of 800Bhart, or that decent buses are available at a small bus station (Nakhonchai Air). This is on Sukhumvit about 200m South of the junction with Pattaya Central road. It can be reached by baht bus Big C route, but you must cross at the traffic lights and walk the 200m down to the station. Buses are available approx 120 baht (about 3 between 6am-8am and one at 4pm. Advance booking is not available.

There are frequent white vans also passing along Sukhumvit. These can be accessed near the traffic lights as described or near rhe walkway bridge over Sukhumvit near the junction with Pattaya South Rd.

Both picking up points have motor taxi stands nearby[ a small "tip" will facilitate the motor bike taxi drivers to stop the correct van for you. The bus drops at the distant terminal in Rayong and a taxi/van will be needed but the vans drop there and at the cxentral bust terminal where there are planty of songthews and an information bureau.

Chanthaburi can be reached similarly, either direct or via Rayong. From Rayong, the van from central bus terminal is the easiest.
