Can anyone tell me if giving used workable cell phones as gifts would be something that the Cuban people could use.

Thanks

Most Cubans I know have better phones than the tourists. Unless they are smart phones I would forget about it.

Pass them out at home. A womans shelter, etc. As post 2 says they have better than most tourists.

Cheers

10 years ago they would take any phone, use the parts, the battery the case. Bangers would walk around listening to the MP3 player and look cool with a cellphone, even one that didn't work.

As advised above, everyone who can afford the minutes has a pretty good phone already. Anything older than an iPhone 6 might embarrass them.

My experience yes they like cell phones but no need to bring them very old phones. I brought 2 snartphones last time - after my contract was over after 2 years but make sure you unlock them before you take it there. If you bring locked phone they still need to find somebody to unlock it down there

Iphone5 is a great gift for them - my experience. Unlock it 1st - they are not big fans of blackberry ☺

It's really something I'm wondering about and I'm not being sarcastic.

What makes a stranger in Cuba more deserving of getting an Iphone or BB then a stranger in Canada? Because unless you stay in Cuba for many months, anyone who you will met during your 1-2 weeks vacations will never be more than a stranger or acquaintance...

When I was down in April , I was told... there was many problems with the Blackberry phones.... Government might be restricting them, because of their security . And do you really want to pay ( pricey ) , to get an old I-phone unlocked ?

Yes, I have seen better phones in Cuban hands than I would ever buy but there are always exceptions. We have a Cuban friend that requested we buy him an unlocked phone in Canada and he would pay for it. He did not want anything extravagant. We bought one and delivered it 2 months later. He was ecstatic and paid for it immediately. It is a BLU 4g, dual SIM, unlocked and only $70 cdn through Amazon. Not all Cubans are the same.

We've been asked to buy and bring items and have been paid for them on delivery. No problem.

I think the mules running the shopping carts between Miami and Havana are covering those requests at way better prices than we can get. Santa Clara might not have the same speedy/cheap connections.
