“Austral baggage allowance is a trap for foreign tourists”

On a recent Austral Airlines flight from Mendoza to Cordoba in Argentina we were rudely refused boarding. When questioned the airline official said our checked bags were overweight ( about 18 kg cf allowance of 15 kg ) and we must pay excess baggage before we could board. This was most surprising as we were not aware of the problem, especially as we had flown on other Austral flights, and there had been no problem. In a panic we had to rush back to the counters , pay the heavy excess baggage fee, and hurry back through security, where I left some items, not recovered.

I booked three domestic flights with Aerolineas and two were on their regional partner Austral. No problems with the flights or timeliness. I think the Embraer regional jets used by Austral are more comfortable and roomy than Aerolineas' 737s and the Embraer seats even have small entertainment screens (can be hard to get earphones though). You get snacks on longer flights, just a drink on shorter flights, and it might be a regional norm that no alcohol is available.

Friendly staff who were so patient with some customers! Lovely clean planes and so nice to have a cold drink and snacks for free - many airlines could learn a thing or two ...

Nice planes. IGR has a weird set up to get to your gate. Pass through gate 3 area, then through Gate 2 area then into gate 1 area. Just keep going, you'll find it. Also they did not let us go through security until the time on our boarding pass, about 45 min before the flight. No idea why, there was plenty of seating in the gate area.

Planes were two across seating with seat back entertainment, for a 90 minute flight. How can you complain? and a beverage service! Took off on time, landed on time.

On the plus side, the flight was on time and the landing in Rio was good. However the in-flight service was poor. The cabin crew were totally uninterested in their passengers and paid no attention to safety, e.g. did not check that seats were in the upright position for landing or that hand baggage was under the seats. In an emergency it would have been a disaster. In addition the aircraft (an Embraer 190) was old and tired and food was basic. I recommend travellers look for alternative airlines.
