“Great Service”
Review of United Airlines

Reviewed January 9, 2019

The flight attendants were very attentive and helped get everything a traveler could want. The flight had some turbulence but there is nothing the United Airlines Staff could do about that. We ended up leaving 45 minutes late because the crew's previous flight was delayed but still managed to arrive in Milwaukee only 10 minutes behind, which was a very nice surprise.

The flight was on December 31, 2018 the last day of the year. The gate agent was very pleasant at check in. The security line moved very fast. The boarding was orderly. The gate agent was helpful. The plane was a Canadair Regional Jet 200 configured two seats on each side of the aisle. The overhead bins are small. All carry on bags are gate checked and delivered at the arrival gate in Houston. The flight was full. The weather was cool and the sky was clear. The pilot announced that there maybe some turbulence before arriving at Houston. About 45 minutes from Houston the plane ran into severe turbulence. The seat belt signs were illuminated the captain called the flight attendant on the phone and asked her to take her seat. There were no clouds on the outside. The plane bounced around for about five minutes. Then the rest of the flight was smooth all the way to El Paso. The flight attendant service soft drinks, water and a small bag of snacks.

It’s a pretty standard flight, which takes an hour or so longer than the reverse journey (due to the head/tail winds of the jet stream).

The plane and the staff are always pretty good for United, but it’s when a problem occurs at the gate and it just drags out longer and longer that is the problem. 2 hours before gate time, and the estimated take off was 12 minutes late. It was closer to 2 hours late by the time they had blamed late equipment arrival and mechanical failures, when all the time our original plane was given over to a non-international route.

I fly lots of airlines while traveling domestically, mostly Jetblue/Southwest, sometimes American, but this time I was flying home on New Years day and didn't want to leave at the crack of dawn from San Diego to Boston on Jetblue, so chose the 12pm United flight thru Houston. Both legs were on United. The first leg was an older plan, creaky seats, no video monitors, a snack service which was eh, and a bev service that was far too late after the snack. The space in coach was not that comfortable and therefore nothing exciting about this flight at all. It was ontime though, so I give credit for that. But in this era, isn't it about staying up with competition? That leg was unremarkable at best, and my wife said she'd not fly United again (perhaps after lots of similar Jetblue experiences). The second leg was a bit better, only because they had video screens, not that they were state of the art, but beggars can't be choosers. Happy things were on time, but unhappy with the passenger experience.
"Hey United, find a way to differentiate yourselves from an otherwise 1980's flight provider or risk going belly up. Either upgrade your fleet, compete on service, or price, or bring back meals, or bring back free bags...something. You can't complete with the likes of Jetblue or Southwest, because even if you were cheaper, I believe passengers will choose them over you these days. Adapt or die, differentiate or get eaten. Make a bold move, maybe reviews will be better then."
