Looks impressive from the outside but is rather tired and basic inside. We had the attic room which was overpriced for a basic room with low ceiling and very little light. there was a lounge but it was very dark and not a good place to hang out. the wiring in the room seemed very dodgy. If you can, walk on but you may have little choice so they get away with it. the swim pool looks good in the pics..it's not!

Room Tip: not the attic rooms or rooms in the annex

We stayed for 3 nights as part of an organised walking tour. The accommodation was simple but clean and comfortable. The owner was very friendly and helpful. We appreciated the residents lounge where we could make ourselves hot drinks. With the electric heater and electric blankets we were perfectly warm and after a long hike we appreciated the bath . The food was simple but tasty.

With the Parador Hotel still closed, the only lodging option at the start of the Cruz de Tejeda to Artenara hiking trail was this less than appealing "refuge." The room was dank and musty; the bath had a moldy ceiling. The lounge area was freezing, and the gas patio heater (placed inside the building!) never worked. The connected restaurant (again, only option in Cruz de Tejeda) served inedible, overpriced fare, with surly service to boot. We paid for two nights, we left after one. Enough said.

We stayed there for one night and payed in advance for our stay. As we arrived, the owner asked for our credit card for a security deposit. Only back home we realized he charged us again for the same night. A mistake that can happen to everyone. However, it is unacceptable he never replied to our mails making him aware of his mistake...if it really was a mistake and not on purpose! We never got the money back.
I recommend to avoid this hotel at all cost.

Joining a group to do a shore to shore walking across Gran Canaria, from north to south, our first stopover was in Cruz de Tejada. Our first choice was the Parador Hotel, but that was closed after serious damage in a resent forest fire. As an alternative I booked in at El Refugio. It turned out to be an oldfashen, family driven hotell. The standard was quite simple, but the service was outstanding. I can not remember to have been so pleased even at top hotels. Problems did not exist in their book.
