4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 April 2012

To begin with...nothing bad or awful about this place..
for folks who'd like to just spend time @a resort and not step out much... this is the place to be!!
pricey place of course... food, parking, snacks, and drinks....even internet is 10$/day.
ITs an out and out resort place..they have a huge private beach but no activities on the beach... they have 3-4 restaurants within the premises..but like I said they are pricey too.

For those who want to see the real Puerto rico, old san juan... pls research well... and u'll find better deals for the same price...more closer to san juan.

Room Tip: tip-- any room with ocean view is good enough.

The location: fabulous! The property: great! The staff: wonderful! Food: overpriced. Parking: a huge pain. The rooms: fantastic!

Overall this was a great place to be. The rooms were nicely laid out, big bathroom, comfy bed, pillows and bedding. The beach was great, free chairs and umbrellas if you wanted. Everything was clean and well-kept. The staff was always willing to help with whatever you needed. The adult pool was lacking in the chair dept. Really nice chairs there, but people came out early and threw their stuff in them in order to have chairs all day and there were just never enough chairs there. We only ate there a couple of times. The Tiki Bar was great! Good food, great bartenders. Victor was our favorite! Prices were high though. $7 for the local beer and $10.50 for most cocktails. The only other restaurant we ate at was Marabell. VERY OVERPRICED! $25 breakfast buffet....how many people can really eat that much at breakfast? And Caribbean night was $35 each. The food was seriously not worth that price and the entertainment could be seen for free from the balcony above the restaurant. It didn't last long and wasn't worth paying to see since the food wasn't great either. Don't know about the other restaurants. We chose to eat off-site since we had a rental car and it was just much more fun that way too. I would definitely stay there again though! With a rental car is the best way though!

Room Tip: We had a corner room with a King. I think it was listed as a resort view room but we could see the o...

We’re very glad you chose Rio Mar as your vacation destination and very much appreciate your feedback. I apologize your dining experience was not what you expected. However, our Food and Beverage team are creating an array of selections in all of the outlets to satisfy every palate and our menu prices are very competitive with that of other hotels and resorts on the island. Thank you for sharing your comments and we hope to see you again!

Beautiful hotel, beautiful view.
With a mile of private beach and miles of rain forest around the hotel, this place has a lot to offer. We enjoyed our stay here, it was a very clean, spacious and nicely designed. Kind of pricey though; so, if you wanna stay there, look for offers. They run specials most of the time. The stuff was very nice and helpful. Definitely recommend this resort.

Just returned from the Rio Mar. My wife, my 5 yr. old and I spent Apr 13 – 23 at this wonderful resort. After reading so many negative reviews (probably from inexperienced travelers or high-maintenance individuals) we were a little apprehensive as our vacation approached. But, we did our homework and knew that it would be expensive and we prepared for that. We knew you needed a car to truly get out and enjoy the area. We knew it was not near San Juan (I can’t believe people complain about that – did they not research their vacation before booking?). We knew it was a drive from the airport, but it was only 30 minutes, so no big deal. The roads are just like driving in Connecticut (unfortunately, the drivers are just like CT drivers too – hehe). Since we did our research we had no reason to use the Concierge, except only to ask for directions to Richie’s Café (which we found out you can see up on the hill above the resort). A good GPS device helps a lot when venturing offsite. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Housekeeping was prompt every morning and the room was always clean. We only had lunch on the resort and either went out for breakfast or ate bananas, boxed cereal and coffee in our room. Dinner was always somewhere different. The Kiosks at Luquillo are fantastic. They look a little shady, but it is perfectly safe. If you go, please try La Parilla and The Cerviche Hut. You won’t be disappointed. Weekend breakfast at the Iguana Pub at the golf course is a nice change from the hotel or the short ride to the offsite breakfast options. Antojitos Puertoriqueno’s (at the entrance to Rt. 968 from Rt. 3) is great for any meal. For a great burger bar go to The Brass Cactus just a mile or two beyond the Kiosk’s. The pool gets crowded early, so go down and reserve your lounge chair right at 8am when the towel hut opens, then you can go back to your chair anytime you desire. We used the Kid’s Club two days (9a – 4p) so my wife and I could go play golf and our son did not want to leave when we came to pick him up. The pool is perfect for families and the waves at the beach are also fun and clean. All in all, our only complaint is that food, drink and sundries ($11.35 for the Sunday NY Times) at the resort is expensive. I would think that if they charged $7 for a can of beer, rather than $8.50 or $8.00 for a drink, rather than $10.50+ they would make up in volume. Ordering several rounds adds up the cost very quickly. All-in-all, everything was perfect. We went to the market and bought our own liquor and mixers and used our room as our “personal bar” and took our drinks with us.

...but people are also winning Gran Melia and El Conquistador. Taxes and fees were another $29, bringing the nightly total to $123. What a deal! We rented a car in Condado, which was much cheaper than the airport ($30/day with my Costco discount). You need a car if you are going to stay at this hotel. Otherwise, you'll be one of those people who comes back to this website, complaining about the outrageous restaurant charges and the poor tours.
This hotel is about 2 miles from the rainforest. One of those miles is just driving within the resort grounds, as this place is huge. Hiking in the rainforest is easy to do on your own. All the trails are paved and marked. Plus, it's free. The visitor's center has a $4 admission fee. Not sure if that was worth it.
Two miles east, you'll find the famous kiosks of Luquillo. We ate at three different kiosks. Our favorite was Tapas 13, one of the newer and nicer restaurants. El Jefe Burger Shack is right next door, but not quite as good. They share a kitchen. Prices are reasonable and food is terrific.
The Ceiba airport is not too far, where you can catch inexpensive flights to Vieques or Culebra.
The hotel itself is beautiful. Unfortunately, the front desk staff is lacking, as previously mentioned. It took them almost 30 minutes to check us in. I literally stood at the counter for 30 minutes. They blamed it on Hotwire, but I think it was them. The clerks seem to constantly visit the back room for "help". This really slows down the check-in and out processes.
We had two rooms. Housekeeping left several cans of Medalla, the local beer, just outside one of the rooms. My 21 yr. old was quick to grab them and head into his room. One room overlooked a beautiful pond, full of wildlife. The other had no view. Even though we'd reserved rooms together, they ended up being about 10 rooms apart. The rooms were large, with huge bathrooms, clean and updated. Beds were comfortable.
The pool area was crowded, as this was Good Friday. There were lots of Puerto Rican families with wristbands, leading me to believe they may be selling day passes. The beach area was really nice. The waves were fairly calm, compared to Condado and the beach was no where near as crowded. The lifeguards said they hadn't seen any turtles nesting, but are on the lookout, as this is the season.
My only other complaint is the towel cards. Don't lose them, as the fine is quite high. Also, don't confuse them for the room key, as I did. I locked myself out of the room, thinking I had a room key. I saw others locked out, so I think this may be a common problem.
All in all, I liked this place. You will too, if not held hostage by a lack of transportation.

I don't have much to complain about our stay at the Rio Mar. The prices were a high for food, parking, snacks, and drinks, but is expected at a resort. If you want internet/wifi you have to pay a ridiculous $10 a day, otherwise it is free in the lobby area. We did complain about some younger party goers that kept us up very late, but the staff was very nice and moved us to a different room. We could hear everything they said from the joining room because there was a large gap under the door. Other than that the hotel staff was very friendly, the room was clean, and bed was comfortable. The grounds, pools, and beach were kept very nice. We ate mostly off the resort, which I would recommend to save money. It is good proximity to all the things to do on the island like the El Yunque rainforest, bio bay, and Old San Juan. I would stay again!
