“An Interesting, Informative, and Entertaining Tour!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 November 2012

The Kohola Ditch Adventure is a great way to see some interesting countryside, which you cannot see from the rental car! Not only that, the tour allows you to step back into the history of the Big Island.

Despite a previous review, I believe that the guide, Hula, did a great job and did not talk too much. She was friendly, funny, outgoing and knowledgeable about the area. She described the human history and construction of the flumes and ditches (the irrigation system that you kayak through), and provided many personal stories and anecdotes, making it a very personal and memorable tour.

While you aren't technically kayaking, the inflatable kayaks seat 4 people and you basically use your paddles to keep from bumping and scraping along the sides of the waterway, as the current keeps your boat moving at a decent speed.

I would recommend the early morning tour, if possible!

“A great time!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 November 2012

We had a great time in the ditch. Hula and Wilton were friendly and super knowledgable about the ditch and all the history involved. We had a good time and our daughter loved it and the ride to the ditch in the pinzgauer. We were sad that it wasn't longer. Would definitely recommend it as something to when you are on the big island.

“A Great Trip Into History, But A Little Pricey”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 November 2012

This used to be called "Flumin The Ditch" and after a few years of being closed for a major renovation, they're open again under the Kohala Ditch Adventures.

We had an afternoon avail, so we decided to try it and we had a great time. The ditch was built as an irrigation canal by Japanese farmers back in the 1910-20's to bring water to the drier side of the island for crops & animals.

You're in long narrow inflatable boats floating down this concrete waterway a little wider than the boat. The guides are excellent in describing the history of this attraction, they're always pointing out interesting facts and it's facinating to see what turn of the century farmers were able to build.

While this isn't the most exciting thing to do, if you have an afternoon, it's well worth the time, but at $140, it's not cheap.

“Relaxing float through paradise”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 November 2012

Our trip started with a ride in a Pinzgauer to the start of the float. We were then divided into groups of 4 and loaded onto inflatable kayaks. The tour moves slowly down the 100-year-old irrigation ditches, through beautiful forest and through ten tunnels. The only effort needed was by the front and back passengers in each kayak, who have paddles used just to keep the kayaks away from the "ditch" walls. Hula, our guide, kept up a running commentary the whole time about the history of the "ditch" and the area, and pointing out plants and animals along the way. One of the passengers in the front kayak was being obnoxious, and she handled him with good grace and a bit of humor. I'm not really sure why we had to wear flotation belts, as the deepest part fo the ditch is about knee deep, but it may be a "safety" regulation they have to comply with.

“Too much talk!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 November 2012

We drove north to celebrate my husband's birthday. The trip itself was fun but not at all relaxing. Our tour guide never shut up the entire trip. Hula had some good historical stories but we heard about her first marriage, bouts with governmental assistance when she was widowed and then a second marriage to the first person she ever kissed.Oddly enough she did not realize that the four people on our boat really didn't want a an earful. Conversation should not be so personal. The trip would have been so much more enjoyable if we could have enjoyed being outside and enjoying the surroundings. Should have stayed in downtown Kona and saved the money. If you are looking for an outside adventure with nature,THIS IS NOT IT.
