Almond Tree Hotel
Ranked #14 of 20 Bicester B&B and Inns
Reviewed 26 July 2011

Was searching for reasonable priced accommodation in the Oxford area but could not find anything so widened my search and came across the Almond Tree. Was a bit sceptical at the look of the hotel and the value looked too good to be true but thought I’d give it a go.

Found the staff to be very helpful and friendly.

Room was neat and tidy, bed was comfortable, bathroom had a lovely shower and room 10 was lovely and warm, put this down to the double glazing and good construction of the modern building.

Was given a code from reception to access the free wifi which worked well.

Breakfast was good and healthy.

The location of the hotel is a bit out of the city centre in an industrial estate but I found it easy walking distance to the centre of town and Bicester Town railway station which had a 22 minute connection to Oxford.

The reception was manned 24 hours a day and they monitored the building via CCTV system which meant the building and cars parked in the car park had extra protection. That made me feel happier about leaving my bike locked up in my car overnight.

So all in all the hotel was perfect for my needs for a 2 day budget stay close to Oxford.

Very pleased.

Room Tip: Room 10 was warm, good in winter.

first impression of hotel from outside is and ugly square building but inside the rooms are nice, well decorated, clean and equipped. my room was at front of hotel so noisy with road however the double glazing worked well, the lift was right outside my room which was handy but noisy throughout the night. good bed and pillows and shower was efficient. breakfast was good value and enough choice. at this point i would have happily recommended the hotel but then we went to pay the bill..............
my sister stayed in another room and paid the bill for both. she was asked to pay an extra £5 each room over what we had been quoted for the single rate when booking. we told the receptionist that the website says singles at £50 and this is the figure we booked at. she then phoned someone whom we presumed was the manager but werent actually told his title. i talked to him and he agreed that we would pay the rate we booked at and had written on our registration form on checking in. handed the phone back to the receptionist whose attitude then was surly to say the least- she spoke not another word to either of us except to say" insert your card". no please/ thankyou/sorry about the mix up. a face that would freeze water and more typical of a sulking teen. as we took our cases i pointed out politely that she would benefit from customers service training, to my back she said something which i didnt catch but may well have been a swear word in polish.
two other guests we spoke to had also had £5 added to the amount they were charged on checking out.

Room Tip: stay if but take earplugs and get a written quote

I booked at room at the Almond Tree after extensive research into the options for accomodation in and around Bicester. We were visiting for a wedding locally and I knew as soon as the invite arrived that the area would be extremely busy that weekend due to a big sporting event taking place locally, so booked the room four months in advance.

I requested early check in, explaining we needed to get ready for the wedding, checked it was possible to return late and even got taxi numbers from the person I spoke to over the phone. They took credit card details, but explained nothing would be charged to the card unless we failed to turn up.

The day before the wedding (a Friday), my husband called the hotel (as we hadn't received any confirmation from them) to make sure the rooms would be ready early and was told we'd booked for that night, not the Saturday (the day of the wedding). He explained that, no, we had definitely requested two rooms for Saturday night, but was told the hotel was fully booked Saturday and our reservation was for Friday.

After expressing his dissatisfaction he was told the manager would call back. Eventually he was called back and told that it seemed the mistake was the hotel's (erm, yes) and they had booked us into a B&B down the road instead. No apology or explanation at all. I cannot believe that, despite taking our booking four months ago and then essentially double booking our rooms, the hotel was so laid back about what had happened.

I wouldn't recommend the B&B we stayed in particularly, either, and it certainly would never have been our choice, being further from the wedding venue and on a busy road, but with all other accomodation booked up in the area, we had no choice.

Very poor service from the Almond Tree, and I am still speechless that, despite admitting fault, the manager didn't even apologise for the problem.

Lesson: always confirm reservations with hotels!

We stayed in this hotel while visiting relations in Bicester for one night. It is set on an industrial estate which was a bit off putting and being on edge of town not a good place if you want a stoll in the evening. However it was a clean modern Basic B&B. Shower was good plenty of hot water and towels. Good continental breakfast, eat as much you like. Very very clean and tidy. Staff was very friendly and helpful. I would stay again.

We checked in late with no problem, the room was absolutely spotless. It had everything you would expect and we slept well. The en-suite bathroom was spacious, and again squeaky clean. tea and coffee supplies were generous, and the room even had a cooling fan with air cooling. For a continental breakfast we ate well. The staff were invariably polite & helpful.
It is true that it is situated on the edge of an industrial estate. But it is on the edge and if you wanted views you'd be better off in Snowdonia. We will certainly stop again

We stayed here for one night as we were going to a wedding at the Tythe Barn, a very short taxi ride away. The place looks like slightly odd from the outside, like it used to be an office, but all is well inside. Bed was reasonably comfy, room spotless and there was a portable air con unit which worked, and was needed, as the weather was very warm. Bathroom was spacious and the continental breakfast was excellent. Staff were polite and helpful. If you wanted, you could order a takeway in the evening using the menus provided and eat it in the breakfast room. For £60 for the room for the night I felt it was good value for this area.

Stayed here as we were attending a wedding at the Tythe Barn. The location was excellent. The hotel isn't very sound proof so take your ear plugs!
Shower was excellent, although the ensuite is tiny.
The breakfast (continental) was very good indeed.
