Pon's River Guest House

The pick-up is great as you can ask them to pick you up anywhere. The restaurant is the best in town and all the food was great, from typical asian food to western kitchen. The included breakfast is also excellent, with fruits, homemade bread and good coffee. We had one of the two rooms with river view and the room as well as the bathroom were rather big and very cosy. Ac and fan both included. You can also book boat tours to Don Det/Don Khone and buses to nearly everywhere.

Room Tip: If possible ask to get one of the two rooms with river view.

Room a fair size, but another small bathroom - so small you can shower whilst sat on the toilet!

Meals are taken across the road - with fabulous river views.

If you can spare a few pounds more, move up the road to their sister establishment, Pon's Hotel - not only great river views but also a very welcome pool.

Spent one night here while travelling. Good and cheap room with AC, clean bathroom with hot water, WiFi and all you need at that low price. Great location in front of the river, they also offer tasty and low cost food.

Big rooms, stayed upstairs near the big Veranda, overlooking the Mekong River.
A/C, TV, WiFi, Hot Water all available. No Shower curtain...makes the entire bathroom very wet ....
Cleanliness also needs attention .
Quality of towels/linen...hm ....
This hotel is cheaply priced but needs an overall make over without delay.
Great location ... its Mekong Riverside restaurant is partitioned by the hotel only by a very small village road.
For a 1 nite stay (on the go) it was acceptable.
We enjoyed our Lao dinner in this place. Staff was accommodating. Great Mekong River view from the restaurant terrace.

The rooms are very big. You can t expect more from this place.
The restaurant is opposite the GH. The owner is very efficient and proactive (the staff a bit less but...).
Centrally located, near the river and some shops. A bit of noise from the ground floor in the morning but Lao people usually get up early.

Ok, so we were about to give a 3 out of 5 to this GH. But, considering the very cheap price, let's say it deserves a 4. You can't expect too much when you pay 80,000k (10$) a night for a double room with A/C, TV and bathroom. ;-)

Pros : such a laid-back, helping, nice staff (Noy, the guy who speaks quite good English, found us a private transport to the border on our last day. He can arrange you anything) ; price ; very spacious room ; A/C worked well but was too noisy ; bed was comfy, even though a bit hard ; best restaurant on the island for cheap prices ; location.

Cons : cleanliness (on our first day there, we found 4 huge roaches coming out of the uncovered drain of the bathroom ; we sprayed them dead and tapped the drain with a big stone. Problem solved). The room wasn't cleaned on our 2nd day, even though we had asked for it twice. We had killed a huge amount of ants on our first day ; they kept lying on the floor even after several cleanings, which means that the floor was never swept. Noisy A/C. No fridge. Wifi was very hit-and-miss.

All in all, we stayed there for 4 nights. :-)

Room Tip: Take a room upstairs and, if available, take the one in front of the Mekong.

We stayed in the upstairs room that looks straight on to the balcony. With windows on two sides we had a great view over the Mekong, the restaurants and the little street. The room is large and tiled and in fair repair. The bathroom was enormous but the shower water still drains to near the toilet, wetting all the floor. However it dries fairly quickly. Sheets and towels were of reasonable quality. This guesthouse is one of the closest to the ferry dock so you just need to walk across the street. Food is good and reasonably priced. Some members of the family have good English, others have none so it depends who is present at the time. The wifi was generally good during our stay but is dependent on weather conditions. The upstairs verandah was comfortable and had a great view.

Room Tip: Upstairs front rooms have great views and excellent light.
