I visited this place after a walk with my husband and our 2 friends. We went in for a drink but ended up having a roast for lunch. We had 3 beef and 1 lamb, everything was cooked perfectly they even came with a side of cauliflower cheese and extra gravy. Veg included carrots (orange and purple), broccoli and red cabbage. For £9.95 each you can't fault it. Staff were very friendly and they also welcomed our dog. Have booked for the set menu in a few weeks time. Would definitely recommend.

Very impressed by the menu choices with traditional pub and restaurant level meals. The chilli prawns for starter and pheasant for main were excellent. We will definitely go back.

Family outing during our stay in Stoke Gabriel and first time for us having a meal under the new team. We loved the wonderful choices, great fish choices in both starters and mains as well as great wine list. The food was divine, thank you Becky & Bob for making us so welcome and Nathan’s cooking is just sublime. A refreshing change from food here in past. Look forward to see my next meal here!

After reading some poor reviews we decided to give it a try,we are very glad we did.
Yes there is a large Boxer dog in the bar but he does not bother you at all,he comes over to greet you but if you show no interest he trots away and watches you from a distance, our dog terrified him (we have a Chihuahua!)
The landlord and landlady could not be more sociable or helpful as are the other staff,as for the food it was some of the best pub food we have had and the chef takes a lot of care in getting it right with it all being cooked fresh so expect a small wait.
Even though it,s at the end of the holiday season the pub was buzzing with a lovely atmosphere so if in the area give it a try along with your dog who will also enjoy the free dog biscuits on the bar.

We ate dinner at the Castle three times during our week in the area in September, which says a lot for the quality of the food and the service. The restaurant was quiet with only a few other tables occupied during each visit. The food is of above usual quality and presentation for a pub. We had a lovely warm welcome from the landlady and the waitresses on each occasion (what a contrast to The Church Inn round the corner!). The service was just right, friendly and helpful without being obtrusive and each of the different girls on duty on each occasion were lovely. The gurnard from the specials menu was delicious and perfectly cooked. My only criticism would be the silly oblong plates - I would much have preferred a round plate with the fish on it and proper portions of vegetables and the choice of potatoes served separately. Little bits of cut out vegetables dotted all over a long plate with little trails of sauce here and there are irritating, even if they taste nice. Decorating a plate with the food like that obviously takes time and if the restaurant had been busy I would think it would really slow up service. The chef came out to speak with us and is obviously very keen to provide food well above the usual pub level, which is commendable, but I would think that perhaps it should be kept in mind that it is a pub and not central London and although the plated food looks pretty and tastes good, most people visiting a pub would probably rather not have little bits of cut out veg with trails of jus or sauce! My husband enjoyed the chicken and leek pie so much he had it on each of the three occasions! The River Exe mussels were lovely, also the fish and chips. The sticky toffee pudding was excellent. I agree with other reviews that it would be good to know which nights the specials are not available. The pub Boxer dog with his disdainful expression was lovely and not even slightly smelly and added to the friendly atmosphere of the pub. We would definitely return to The Castle if in the area again.
