My wife and I had previously had a bar lunch in this hotel, and enjoyed the food. The hotel looks quite imposing from the outside so we thought it would be nice to book a room for a night and have dinner in their restaurant. Well, we checked in and went up to our room. Having seen the room we should have left there and then. The room was the size of a shoebox, the dirty window looked out on to a rusty tin roof of an ajoining building,
sliding doors to the bathroom and wardrobe had come off their runners and were just propped against the wall, the shower in the "en suite" well you had to run around it to get wet and the grouting was mouldy, the two bedside lampshades would have been rejected by a charity shop etc etc etc.
Well we thought we would "tough it out" ,had booked a table in the restaurant for 8pm.
At 7.30 we wandered down to the bar for a pre dinner drink and were told our table was "over there in the bar area"
I explained that we had booked a table in the restaurant.
7.45 we went up to the first floor restaurant only to be told there was no record of our booking, so I explained that we were staying in the hotel and had booked a table for two at 8.00pm.
Total chaos ensued, we were told to "wait there".
We sat in the hallway outside the restaurant.
After a while I asked the waitress running the show if we would get a table and was told in no uncertain terms that it was only seven minutes to eight so we would have to wait at least seven more minutes.
We packed our case and left.
My wife and I have stayed in many hotels in the UK and around the world.
The Gordon Arms Hotel in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, is to date, the worst hotel we have ever come across.

Mr Yates arrived at the hotel in the midst of a very busy evening where a wedding was in full flow and the restaurant and lounge already fully booked.
He was offered a budget room which had become available due to a last minute cancellation and was informed that the restaurant and lounge were fully booked but that we would endeavour to provide him with a table as near to his preferred time of 8.00pm as possible subject to tables becoming available.
I will not comment on the exaggerations regarding the budget room.Unfortunately there are few town centre hotels that give a views of rolling hills or seaside although some of our rooms look towards the Clashidarroch over the rooftops.
Mr Yates became very abusive to staff when a table was not available as soon as he demanded one displaying signs of stress. This is despite the earlier warning that we were full.
I cannot apologise for our reputation being such that residents, locals and visitors alike have to make an advance reservation on a Saturday night or be prepared to wait.
The table became available at approx. 8.10 pm but in the meantime Mr Yates had chosen to check out. All charges incurred up to that point were waived.

This hotel was definitely value for money! For the very reasonable price we paid, it was worth it. The food that I ate in the hotel was definitely fresh, home-cooked food and was delicious. The staff were very friendly and I book this hotel for colleagues a lot who are also happy with it. If you need a clean room for the night and a good feed when you are in this area, I would highly recommend the Gordon Arms Hotel.
