After some research we visited here from Hiroshima using our JR pass which covered the train and ferry.
Its a very nice trip, the highlight for us was the Ropeway and then the nice walk up to Mount Misen. The town is nice to walk around and get photos of the Shrine.
Food can be expensive compared to other places we have visited, and noticed a few people brought there own snacks to eat by the water. And yes there are a lot of deer walking around.
To get there we caught the JR train on the San-Yo line, walked 5 minutes to the JR ferry ( used our JR pass) after arriving at the island headed to the Ropeway, it is signposted. You have the option of using a shuttle from the stop near the park, but honestly its a 10 minute walk to the entrance.
After the 2 cable car rides you arrive at the top, the walk to Mt Misen observation can be difficult for some, but take water and comfortable footwear. We purchased the return ticket but wish we had only gone one way and taken the walk down (personal choice as we like walking)
A couple of points to note, the island gets busy, we went straight to the cable car from the ferry arriving at about 0945 (opens at 9) with only a few people around, when we came back down the queue was at about 20 minute wait, and as we walked down passed 2 reasonably sized tour groups heading up. The town is also packed with tourists, with hindsight we should have been 1 hour earlier, looked around the shrine and then completed the gondola and Mt Misen walk. We really enjoyed our day here.

The short ferry ride over is fun.

Once there, you get the feeling this place could be worth staying for a few days as a base.

Plenty to see and do. Can get crowded but seems to handle it ok.

Miyajima Island is well worth the quick trip on the local ferry. Try to go at high tide when the O-torii Gate looks like it is floating in the water. The Itsukushima Shrine is beautiful and very interesting as are the surrounding hills. There are many temples to visit and the small town is filled with wonderful things to buy and delicious food. Be sure to try the local traditional Momiji Manju, a small warm cake shaped like a maple leaf and filled with different kinds of fillings, we preferred the cream filling - delicious!
You need at least a half day on this beautiful island.

Lovely to look at, and great fun to be beside the seaside. Of course it is a bit tacky: when is a seaside town ever not? But it exudes joy, and if you catch it os a sunny afternoon, it is splendid.

Despite the weather (rain all day) we loved this island, the views and the atmosphere.
The view of the Torii in the sea is such an iconic sight.
There are deer everywhere. Lots of touristy shops, so walk on a bit to escape some of
the crowds.
We were visiting Hiroshima on a cruise and they actually ran a fast ferry from the cruise berth to Miyajima and back, but there are other ferries from other points in Hiroshima.
Would love to return, in better weather next time!
