For many years we have enjoyed our Greek coffee on the balcony restaurant overlooking the fantastic Bay of Navarino. It was sitting here last week soaking up the beautiful view that we got the tip to attend this year's Navarino Day Celebrations. Having regularly watched the celebrations over the last 20 years it seemed this year was a must.
The Battle of Navarino took place on the 20th October 1827 and was a decisive naval battle in the Greek War of Independence (1821-1832).
The yearly celebrations generally involve the Russian Naval Band and traditional Greek dancing on the evening of the 19th October. The next day there is a procession of children, partisans dressed in traditional costume accompanied by a Greek brass band. This is followed by a military march pass by personnel from the Greek and Russian armed forces.
In addition to the normal events, for the 190th anniversary a special programme was organised. This year the festivities concluded with a re-enactment of the sea battle climaxing in a firework display. The combination of music, narration and lighting provided a spine chilling atmosphere as the battle raged and ships burned. The whole experience was spectacular. It was well organised and perfectly executed. Congratulations and well done to all concerned.
We cannot wait to see the 200th anniversary.

Not really a beach hotel as you must swim from the rocky shore line but there are ladders into the sea. There is a bit of sand on a terrace for kids to play in. Lovely terraced gardens and outdoor bar with lounges and other seating down to the sea. The bar and restaurant were closed the last days of September when we were there. Wonderful sea views from rooms with balconies as well as from the breakfast room where there is indoor and outdoor seating. Rooms are rather small, beds are fine but the bathrooms need updating. The tubs with showers are narrow and treacherous with shower curtains that are way too long so you are forever stepping on them while trying to position yourself in the curved tub. Not safe! One of our bath towels was badly frayed with a large hole in it. The hotel needs some TLC because they have a friendly front desk staff, a perfect location with views, nice breakfast offerings, and a very short walk to restaurants, the main square and the castle.

Location: At the end of a short road from the harbour, sandwiched between the castle and the sea. Because of this there is no private parking, but residents park on the approach road, which being a cul-de-sac attracts only the slowest of passing (parking) traffic.
Outdoors: Wonderful tiered garden with bar, numerous loungers, seating areas etc and dock for swimming, as well as a couple of other ladders. Being Greek, there was taped music, which it could do without.
Rooms: Double room with balcony over the sea was perfect. Well equipped with suitable furniture and very comfortable beds. The balcony was large enough with table and chairs; perfect a a late evening glass of wine accompanied by the lapping of the waves underneath.
Bathroom: The one letdown at this hotel, and the reason we did not give 5 stars. Although it has been first rate, maintenance might not have been what it could be, The knob converting it to shower did not work (or took several tries, and even then cut out half way through the shower) which made for a less than pleasant experience.
Breakfast was served in a light and airy top floor restaurant surrounded by a large balcony for outdoor eating. Good buffet with salads, meat and cheeses, cakes and pastries, yogurt etc.
The hotel was clearly lovingly designed (particularly the outdoor area) some years ago, and just needs a little more maintenance to bring it back to 5* standard.

Room Tip: Rooms with sea view are brighter and their balconies an asset

The hotel location is great, with a very nice view on the Navarino bay. The hotel has a beach bar where it is also possible to swim. It is in a walking distance from the town of Pylos. Do not hesitate to pay extra for a room with a front balcony on the sea.

We stayed at this wonderful hotel in Pylos for 2 nights and we wished we could have stayed more. Very beautiful location just under the old castle of Pylos with an amazing view. The hotel is the perfect size: not too small not too big and it has big nice windows and big balconies where you can enjoy even more the view. The stuff were very welcoming and helpful. The sunbathing area just perfect. With direct access and your own private little beach. Cant recommend it enough!
