We stayed here for Six nights and had a fab time. Beautiful hotel with lot of amenities. Excellent choice of food in the restaurant and Nonkey, Shashi and other chefs were always willing to prepare "vegetarian " food if need be. Monday, Wednesday and Saturday are theme nights in the main restaurant and they had plenty of choices. Kamara's nans were excellent and went well with the curries.
Could improve on the "welcome reception " on arrival. It missed the "Great Sri Lankan" hospitality we received at other hotels on our tour.
Nice and quiet beach but a bit disappointed since we couldn't swim in the sea due to high currents. We were told that it's rare that one can swim in the sea here - unlike other beaches in Sri Lanka.
My wife enjoyed the morning Yoga secession and was nice to walk early morning with Dinesh on the beach. Enjoyed water aerobics everyday.
On the whole enjoyed our stay here.

We are pleased that you have both enjoyed the facilities and experienced quite a lot of what the resort has to offer. We do apologize for the lack in the “Sri Lankan” welcome you received. This is an area we are looking at improving, as such please rest assured the next time you visit, this would definitely be rectified.

Thank you for your warm words and recommendation which we will be sharing with our team. We do look forward to welcoming you again in the near future.

Are Shangri-La 5 stars hotels all around the world ? Yes if you go to Dubai, Paris,...
The one in Hambantota is weird: premises are really awesome (our suite was absolutely stunning) but the site is a bit disappointing and the service awkward.
Well, as the hotel propose half, full board and all inclusive packages we should have guessed that it would be weird: if you are not Chinese or more than 65 years old you feel alone.
The hotel is a beach resort, but you do not really enjoy the beach as it is isolated from the hotel by hurdle and kind of wall (when you are in family pool), moreover at that place sea is usually moved and dangerous due to ripping streams: nobody on the beach.
The golf course is pretty nice, the practice range is difficult to access, very inconvenient (you need buggy to get balls basket and you cannot play woods).
But the real issue is the service: crew is very kind (I have never been conveyed so many excuses and discounts on my bills), but you have to repeat your order several time, to wait for 45 mn or more to get your meal, etc.... Kind but unskilled and inefficient
When you pay about 800 USD your room for one night you clearly expect better.
The good surprise is that meal and drinks are cheap.
Being used to go to Shangri-La hotels and to Asia we expected far better.

Our stay got off to a bad start. We had booked and paid for all inclusive but the hotel had no record of this and it took frantic emails and phone calls to our travel agent before it was sorted, quite a few hours later. Also, I thought we had requested quiet rooms but we were given one overlooking the children’s play area. Luckily it’s not too noisy but we get some noise in the corridor outside our room as we are close to the family rooms. We were moved along a few rooms but not to the quiet wing where we would rather be. The WiFi is excellent everywhere, probably the best we have ever had in a hotel, and we’ve visited a lot.
The Premier Ocean view room is lovely, spacious and well appointed, overlooking the Indian Ocean. It was pretty clean except for dust and grime behind the floor lamp and a bit in the bath. The bathroom is spacious with a good walk in shower as well as a bath. There is only one basin, which is unusual for a 5 star hotel in our experience. Bed is very comfortable and the goose down pillows fantastic. Very pleasant balcony with comfortable seating. One thing I am surprised about is that we only have instant coffee in the room. The room description says tea and coffee making facilities so I expected proper coffee from a 5 star hotel and only brought a small amount from home. I asked about a coffee machine as I saw proper coffee on the cleaners cart, but it seems only the family suites have a coffee machine.
The adult pool is nice and clean and the main pool is great but needs a clean. We found it difficult to find a sun bed round the main pool but not the adult pool. There are plentiful pool towels. The beach is very beautiful with nothing on it. The sea is rough and you are not allowed to go in.
The hotel is extremely spacious and beautifully decorated.
We have been rather disappointed with the buffet in the evening. It is cramped, with people rushing round all the time. It’s like having dinner in Piccadilly Circus! The food is plentiful but not very tasty and mainly lukewarm. Breakfasts are much better. We are going to try the other restaurants, where all inclusive gives us an allowance, but I have now picked up a tummy bug and can’t eat. I will keep off the seafood in future, although it could have been anything!
The service everywhere is so slow it’s hard to believe! You need to be very patient if you want wine with your meal. And order your drinks and food at least half an hour before you want them in the pool bars. There is a 3 piece band playing in the Gimanhala bar in the evenings. They are not bad and it’s the only entertainment we could find. The first time we went in there, there were 2 other couples in there besides us but it took over half an hour for the waiter to bring the drinks we ordered. You would be hard pressed to overdo the drinking here. The beer is ok, the wine is ok and the cocktails ok but not up to the standard I’d expect from this class of hotel.
The staff members are very friendly and pleasant. This is a great place for kids as there are so many things for them to do but perhaps not quite as good for couples. Unless you are both keen golfers!

Shangri La charm begins on arrival with the offer of a cool towel and cold drink. The staff in reception, restaurants, golf centre and pool bars were attentive and ready to meet requests. The golf course is still under development but there are enough challenging holes and helpful caddies to make play enjoyable.

Arranged along beach in blocks of four floors. Isolated location.

Large smart rooms with king size bed, refrigerator (empty), kettle, small table and settee. Bathroom has bath and shower. Quiet aircon and ceiling fan.

Breakfast is buffet in main restaurant - good with lots of choices western and Sri Lankan. Eggs cooked to order bacon and sausage in the ‘pork corner’. Other cooking stations for Indian hoppers etc.

Main restaurant in evening is buffet again with many choices and themed nights seafood, Indian, Italian... As with most buffets dishes can be variable but mostly ok to good.

Two restaurants available a-la-carte Asian and steak/seafood. We were not impressed with the food at the Asian and found the drinks expensive - it even had some of the same wines as the other restaurant but at higher prices! The steak/seafood restaurant on the other hand had great steaks and lobster (not together) - it was listed as the golf course clubhouse and although the menu wasn’t large it has a number of tables outside and was a good, peaceful, alternative to the buffet.

We were on half board but were told on arrival that we had an allowance that could be used in the a-la-carte restaurants if we didn’t want the buffet.

Food and drinks were expensive for Sri Lanka.

Staff, without exception, were excellent - very helpful and would always try to accommodate guest requests.

There’s an adults only pool which was normally peaceful. Sun beds were never a problem but I don’t believe the hotel was even half full so even the main pool was fairly quiet.

There are a few sunbeds on the beach which is magnificent and almost totally deserted - beach walks are a must! So far there are no other hotels within half a hours walk either way - in fact not much of anything (fishing village in the distance to the right).

Sea swimming is challenging, Waves break close to the shore so you need to get beyond this point to swim but too far and the lifeguard gets concerned!

Wi-Fi free and available in rooms- reasonable speed.
