I did not stay here but at the other property, Real Minas, that is owned/managed by Martin. We were given a tour of the Riverside Lodge. The only reason for the 4 star instead of 5 is it has no air conditioning, which limits months that would be comfortable staying here, and all rooms have a claw foot tub (no shower) that has high side, which would be difficult for anyone with mobility issues or even arthritis. This hotel is like a museum with paintings, heavy antique furniture, painted ceilings - a step back into a wealthy home fully furnished. There is a courtyard in the middle. No elevators. floors are rough hewn stone in the bedrooms we saw.

Thanks for your words. For more comfort, since last summer, we acquire AC units for our guestrooms, and for those with mobility issues, we are offering the upper lever rooms. I really enjoyed reading about your kind remarks on our property. Please make sure to let us know if you or any of your acquaintances decides to visit us in the future.
Warmest Regards.

Travel is about special moments that remain in your memory and there is a memory from this visit to Batopilas that will remain with me. It was the morning after our arrival. The drive down into the canyon from Bahuichivo was hard, we arrived late and when we did arrive electrical power had been taken out by a storm. But Martin, the manager, was there to greet us, our rooms were lit by lanterns and the hotel was charming. However, it was hot, there was no air moving and there were mosquitoes so it was not a fully comfortable night. In the morning my friends all found their way to the balcony of my second floor room, all four of us wearing the sparklingly clean bath robes the hotel provided and were sitting around the small table when the gentleman assisting Martin arrived with cups and an enameled pot of fresh hot coffee (maybe the best I have ever had). We were looking down on the small court yard, the fountain was providing a gentle splash of water, the trees were laden with fruit and circled by swallows. It was one of those special moments and all hardships were forgotten. I will always remember Batopilas.
This hotel is certainly special and fully retains it’s original eighteenth century hacienda architecture and character. Service was welcoming and gracious, (i.e. - one of my friends sat to listen to music playing on an old radio in a sitting room when Martin unexpectedly brought him a small glass of sherry, a very thoughtful touch). The other staff we encountered were always friendly and while Batopilas is off the beaten path (we saw no other travelers or tourists while there) we felt entirely safe in their care.

David; thank you very much for your kind words about our property, personnel and destinaton. We've been having such a great rainy season that caused some shortage in Batopilas's eletricity services, we are really sorry that it happend while you where in town, but since we are surrounded by indigenous land, rain means to the native and us, their neighbours, a good harvesting season, so please accept our appologies for the unconveniences and since the first night at our Hacienda was not as cozy as we always mean it to be, on behalf of Skip McWilliams, President of our company, we offer to you and your party, a complementary night in your next visit.

We sent your comments to our personnel in Batopilas and Martin answed...."it is very easy to be gracious with such a group of gentlemen.." So beeing said, we would be very pleased if you came back and visit us again. Warmest Regards.

My son and I wanted to celebrate his last spring break as a high school student with a trip to the Copper Canyon. Ostensibly, the trip was to have been all about El Chepe, but, really, the absolute highlight was staying at the Riverside Lodge in Batopilas. Sonia was incredibly helpful beforehand in helping us make arrangements and taking care of every last little detail. Once we were there, Martin and his staff took over and treated us like family vs. like guests. (One morning we had breakfast tortillas that his mother made.) The hotel itself is phenomenal. Just lovely. Care and attention has gone into every square inch. And, after the 7+ hour drive on twisting mountain roads from Chihuahua, it truly was an oasis. Batopilas itself is sort of a sleepy little town, but that was part of its charm. And Martin pointed our way to some very good restaurants in town. It is definitely on my list to return one day...sooner rather than later, I hope.

Wow, we had the most amazing stay at this incredible hotel. Martin, the manager couldn't have made us feel more welcome. We were doted on for our whole stay with complimentary drinks and popcorn while we were studying our spanish in the incredible lounge or complimentary sherry in the evening while we read one of the ancient books on offer. The rooms were spotless and you felt transported back in time wandering around the whole building. Every day, Martin and a few workers, swept and wiped and kept the place immaculately clean. Martin even organised a cake and wine (all complimentary) for my partners birthday. We truly felt like royalty here.
We would also like to mention that you should definitely go for a walking tour with Manuel. He is the most amazing guide. He is genuine, friendly, knowledgeable and just all round amazing. He is 70 years old but never slipped and sprang up the hills like he was 20. We were so impressed. Everyone knows of him so you can ask in any hotel and they will contact him for you.

Thanks so much Martin and all your crew for such an amazing stay in an incredible hotel. Mikey had such a great birthday weekend there.

Room tip: We stayed in the room just off the lounge and its on the street but very quite and cool.

I had heard of this utterly charming antique hotel. Because I was there in August, the inn was closed. But being a typical friendly village, the manager opened it up for me to see. I was overwhelmed by this extraordinary antique hotel. Each named room is a gem from the past. After hearing the prices, I was happy to be staying at my cheap clean very pleasant hotel on the other side of the square. But the Lodge is a stunner which should be seen. It is across the corner from the village's general store which still uses it's turn of the century brass cash register!
