We started staying at Bed & Breakfasts, many years ago because it was like being welcomed into someone's home rather than the sterile atmosphere of a room in a chain motel. The best part of all was getting to spend time with the hosts while they share stories about the history and attractions of the community. However, that isn't always the case anymore as many B&B's have become very large with many rooms and the owners are not always available. Thankfully, we found Maplecrest Farm outside of Fergus, Ontario. This is a beautifully restored stone farmhouse with a large addition to accommodate guests. But the addition is so well incorporated into the original structure that you feel as though you are staying in an extra bedroom of the house. The best part of our visit was our host. Dorothy Collin and her late husband undertook the renovations some time ago as a retirement project. Dorothy welcomed us, into her home, sat with us on her patio while we shared refreshments. After we returned from dinner in Fergus, the three of us sat in her family room as she told us about acquiring and improving the property as well as her adventures as a B&B host. That continued the next morning over a sumptuous breakfast. This was truly one of our more memorable Bed & Breakfast experiences and we certainly look forward to returning.
