Owner description: Over the course of time the 14th century fortified castle has been home to a number of illustrious personnages who gradually transformed it into a delightful residence acquired by Louis XVI. The royal estate is now a presidential residence, open to the public and used at intervals to receive heads of state invited to France. It contains some magnificent examples of interior decoration, such as the marble chambers, the rococo decorations in the “Marie-Antoinette” apartments or those used by Napoleon in neo-Pompeian style. It is surrounded by a formal garden, canals and five islands. The visit includes the castle, the Queen’s Dairy and the shell cottage. Site with the "Outstanding Garden" label. Open:> 1st April to 30th September: from 9.50 a.m. to noon and from 1.50 p.m. to 6 p.m.> 1st October to 31st March: from 9.50 a.m. to noon and from 1.50 p.m. to 5 p.m. Closed:> Tuesdays.> 1st January, 1st May, 1st November, 11th november and 25th december. Although at time of our visit in January 2016 the Palace was closed for refurbishment, we still enjoyed excellent park. One can walk there for hours and enjoy silence and tranquility. Take some bread with you to feed numerous ducks and swans. Exit the Chateau and turn left to walk in another park adjoined to Chateau. Centre of Rambouillet also offers few bars and restaurants. Overall, not a bad change-of-scenery trip from Paris.

While it is a treat for fans of history, the gardens are well-maintained and worth walking in! Opens early enough to allow visitors a quick view of the grounds before taking trains into Paris.

Park in the town centre car park but not over night as the market may well spring up around you or your car may be gone overnight!
wander in and enjoy the great views of Chateaux and over lakes. Good gardens to walk in. NB Chateaux Currently being refurbished.

We walked down to the park after our visit to the excellent Model railway museum. We did not go into the chateau, which was being renovated, swathed in sheets of plastic at the front, but attractive at the back. The gardens and water features are pleasant to explore, though unfortunately we could not find our way around the large lake, the gate being barred that we found. By then we were rather tired, so after a short walk returned to the town for coffee and to return to the station. The guide book speaks highly of the tour, and should we return, I would suggest a taxi or bus from the station, as it is quite a long way.
